Stubbington Green Runners & AC

Tim Sullivan

Tim Sullivan

What's your full embarrassing name?

Tim Sullivan (no way am I telling you my middle name)

Married, or are you young, free and single and like to mingle?

Married but allowed out on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Where do you live?

Locksheath

Do you work or stay at home?

I work otherwise I won’t be let out Mondays and Wednesdays

How long have you been a member at Stubbington?

About 2 and half years, I think.

Can you remember your first race?

Yes  a 5000m race at Thames Valley Harriers running track in west London

How often do you bother to go training?

4 times a week.

What is your favourite training run?

A 6-8 mile run down to Swanwick along the Hamble foreshore then towards Solent Breezes and back home through Warsash Common

What was your best ever race?

Gibraltar International 10km (there was one Moroccan!!) in 1992. My peak as a runner (losing half a stone from food poisoning the month or so before helped!!) Set my lifetime PB of 33min 40 seconds. Never to be repeated sadly!

And what was your worst or most embarrassing race?

Hitting the wall in the little known Grand Union Canal marathon donkeys years ago. Legs were like jelly and I couldn’t stop falling over. 25 years later (2009) I completed the London marathon in 3:15 and managed to stay on my feet – until the cramp set in after the race that is!

Do you have a pre-race ritual?

Rest the day before and no booze that evening. Turn up early to allow time for all the warm up runs to the gents!

What is the best piece of gear you have bought?

Garmin 305 then 405 GPS (although at first I realised I’d been kidding myself for years on how fast I was running in training!)

Worst piece of gear?

My old waterproof(ish) top. I’ve had it for years; there’s a hole in the sleeve and all the reflective tape has worn off. Another 10 years and I’ll probably have to get new one!

Why do you run when you could be sat at home watching EastEnders?

East what? I think it was partly the trash on TV that drove me to running!

What does she/he who must be obeyed think about your running?

Doesn’t give a monkeys now because she’s packed up running and taken up cycling!

What is the one piece of advice you would give to any new runner?

Vary your runs, run with good company and have something to aim for each year
