Alton 10
The Alton 10, as penultimate HRRL race of the season, provided another challenge for the 20 Stubbington Runners who were not put off by the profile in the race program. The race itself followed the same course as previous years, and is recognised to be one of the more challenging 10 mile races in the area. It certainly cannot be described as a pb course. The weather whilst dry and not as hot as previous years, was a little breezy.
Unfortunately 1 mile into the race Donna Mitchell decided that a minor injury was going to put paid to her race, and she sensibly decided to save herself for another day. It was left to the 5 remaining Stubbie ladies to race for the glory of the team. Emily lead the ladies home in a fantastic time of 65.33 minutes, which was only 5 seconds behind the mens captain. Emily’s reward was 2nd place overall, and 1st lady from HRRL clubs, thereby receiving a 100% score. Just reward for the weeks of marathon training during the winter and spring. Not too far behind Emily was Susie Mcgregor who also achieved one of her best performances of the HRRL season, in a time of 70:32. The ladies captain completed the A team and also enjoyed a fine race, a result that moves Sally into the top 20 overall in the HRRL standings. The Ladies team finished a very close second to Eastleigh ladies for the team prize. Georgie and Lucy also ran very good races. Georgie after a short absence from competitive races, and Lucy, most credibly after a week of being laid low with a virus.
In the Mens race Dave Jeffery relaxed pre race in the knowledge that there was no chip to remember this time, just the sight of his twin brother running for Basingstoke to worry about this week. Dave lead home the Stubbington A team, in a time that reflected the undulating nature of the course, and conditions. He did however manage to keep ahead of the Wayne, who must be enjoying the break from training, as he was so nearly caught by Andy. Andy’s remarkable return to form so quickly after his knee operation has surprised many, and the ladies at his “fat fighters” class must be very proud of him. I was able to complete the mens team in 30th place, which moved us into 2nd in the overall team standing.
Mike Harper lead home the B team and was Stubbington’s highest scorer in the Age Graded results. This is a nice a achievement, and just reward for the £’s he invests in podiatrists, chiropodists, chiropractors, physiotherapists, and many more in his support team. Seriously, well done Mike. Joining the “old man” was young Kevin, Old Nick, and Bruce’s long lost brother, Marcus. Richard Edmunds enjoyed another HRRL event, and lead home the C team made up of Tim Crumpton, Phil May, and the long legged Nigel Witcher. Making up the Stubbie contingent was Christopher Douglas, Alan White, and Gary Blackburn.
The final race of the HRRL season takes place on Sunday 15th May at Netey, after which the final individual, and team tables will be published. Results following the Alton race are available http://www.hrrl.org.uk/default.htm
