South London 10k

An invite from a friend saw me taking part in the South London 10k on Sunday 23rd May.

Although it was an early start, the heat was nearly unbearable on Wimbledon Common and I set off far too speedily, with the knowledge that my friend's PB of 41 minutes would be hard to reach, but might still be attainable.

Things were looking good to begin with, a large downwards slope lulling me into a false sense of pace, but ominously the course doubled back on itself and the hill took its revenge! Meanwhile, neither of us had managed to build up any kind of lead over each other as we passed through the High Street and back to the Common, slowing all the time.

Around 200m from the finish I summoned up a sprint, only for my racing partner to respond. In the end it was a dead heat 45:03. Slow for both of us, but given the punishing conditions, a pleasing result. Final position 27th out of 198. Matt Abbott.
