Promenade 5k Series
THE final Promenade 5k of the year took place on a calm late summer evening on the first day of September. Once again, running conditions were near ideal with just a slight breeze on the return leg for runners to negotiate.
The 5k series, which for the first time this year was extended to five races from the usual three race format, proved to be a firm favourite once again, with an average of 161 runners from local clubs turning out to run at the mid week evening fixtures.
At race number five it was win number four for Chichester Runner James Baker, who crossed the line in 15mins 23secs to record his quickest victory of the year. And, in doing so, Baker confirmed his place as top dog in the series for the fourth consecutive year.
Second place went to Matt West of Winchester & District (15.52) with Stubbington’s Mark Le Gassick taking third (16.12). Both athletes also finished in second and third respectively for the overall 2010 series.
City of Portsmouth’s Karrie Blake was the runaway winner in the ladies’ race, with a time of 17mins 54secs, almost a minute up of second placed Woking AC’s Rose Nicholson (18.43) and virtually two minutes in front of Portsmouth Jogger Rachael Clay who was third (19.51).
It was win number of three of the series for Blake who was crowned prom queen for the third consecutive year after winning the title in 2008 and 2009.
A total of 11 SGRAC members ran at one or more of the five fixtures in 2010, with six completing the necessary three or more races needed to achieve an overall placing - Zac Conaty, Mike Harper, Mark Le Gassick, Geraldine May, Phil May and Rachael Openshaw.
