Stubbington Green Runners

April Injury Recovery

Lewis Chalk

After Salisbury 10 I should have known better to have rested and not pushed the pace in training......however I did and the result was a strained hamstring and missing the Eastleigh 10k and a great chance at getting a PB. But the time off has allowed me to do a fair bit of recovery training which has included aqua jogging, more squats and lunges than I care to remember and plenty of cycling....but no a triathlon yet!

This training and a few fun runs has been quite refreshing even though at my first come back attempt I did pull out at 2k. This was at the Oakhaven 10k, it was a really nice route although I didn't get to see a lot! I slipped round a corner and felt my hamstring twinge so decided to walk back rather than risk further injury. I was frustrated having been in the lead but the prize was an Easter Egg so I didn't miss out too much and on my walk back I got plenty sympathy from the other runners! One jerk did however call out "tortoise and the hare!" and my response to that was "see you at Alton!"

So another week of recovery squats and lunges and I found myself walking through Hyde Park in London and stumbled across a British Heart Foundation fundraising event. I thought why not and signed up for the 5 or 10k jog / walk and then realised it would be a struggle in a suit and dress shoes!

I got bored at the 3k mark only being able to walk so decided I would finish the 5k and then support the other participants. The crowds were great and even better were the comments I heard on the way round.......

"Wolf Whistle.....you're definitely the best dressed!"
"The London Marathon has loads of bands, I am surprised there are none for this event?"
"I wonder if the winner set a record?" (his 10k time was 38minutes, I don't think Mo Farah should panic just yet!)

So it turned out to a rather interesting run / walk and the catalyst for my summer race season. I set my new walk and talk record for a 5k at just under 52minutes however come the Promenade Series I hope finish a bit quicker!

See you at Alton (I hope)

Cheers, Lewis Chalk.
