National Triathlon Age Group Championships

Mike White

I took part in this event on 21st June at Druridge Bay in Northumberland and was presented with the medal as National Champion, age Group (50 to 54) – was first out of the 21 competitors in this Group.  Of course it all depends who turns up on the day and I’m not necessarily expecting to be able to defend the title next year at a different event, (I’ll give it my best shot of course, if I can make it to the event).

(Mark, the new wetsuit made quite a difference as I won by exactly a minute and I think it gave me at least that off the swim!)

Took 6 hours to drive up there but I made sure I had a day to recover and managed to resist the temptation of very fresh local fish and chips the day before. Although it was a relatively big event it was run with typical Northumbrian friendliness and good humour. It was professionally run and well marshalled.  The bike route took in a section of main road along side the park which was closed to traffic for the event which is an unusual privilege in the UK.

It was a standard Olympic distance event (1500m; 40K; 10K) and I managed a PB in 2:06:28 although the distances were not thought to be accurate which was a pity, (bike a bit long and run quite a lot short). Mike White.
