Race Comments 2009
Please leave your comments by emailing peekay63@aol.com – good or bad, because we would like to hear from you.
Howard Clark: (Portsmouth Joggers Club) I thoroughly enjoyed the new course, including the sneaky inclines. As ever the slickness of the organization was exemplary and I shall ensure that these favourable comments will be reflected in Runnersworld. Well done to you and all the team for an excellent race - I shall definitely return next year. |
Jim Clow: Thanks for putting on a great event. I enjoyed the race very much. The new scenic and rural course is excellent, a big improvement over the old one, despite the (small) hills. Thanks to everyone at SGRAC and your other helpers for your hard work and good organisation on the day. |
Martin Billett: (Midas Runners) A short note to say how much we all enjoyed your 10k this morning - well organised and Marshalled and a great course. Very friendly bunch and thanks to the orange juice girls who were very welcome! Thanks to all - we’ll all be back next year. |
Sally Dale: (Gosport Road Runners) A BIG thank you to all the organisers, marshals and helpers of this year’s race. Liked the new course and you even managed to organise the weather! Well done! |
Tony Smith: (Denmead Striders) Thanks for the great race. A big pat on the back to all involved in organising the day and to the marshals who done an outstanding job. I thought the new start worked very well, apart from some people not playing game regarding their start positions. I enjoyed the new course, even the smallish hills at 2 & 7k's. My son and wife had a giggle at the mug...they were trying to work out which of the runners was my category. Will be back again next year. |
Colin Jones: (Chairman - Eastleigh Running Club) The new course was excellent, especially as it was less exposed as the previous one thereby offering more shelter from the wind. In all an interesting course, well organised and well marshalled. Feedback from other members from my club were likewise positive. Well done. |
| Jason Lovibond: (Portsmouth Joggers) Ran the race today and I have to say a special well done to the organisers for changing the course, I enjoyed the race especially at the end running past some members of the same running club as me! Well done Portsmouth Joggers! | |
| Tobester: It was a very good race. Posbrook Lane wasn’t as long as I’d thought and the marshalling was good. It’s a little unusual to have downhill followed by uphill for all the hills (no struggle followed by a downhill coast) but it was a good race. Must have cost them a fortune to shut that many roads and I hope that the usual irate drivers didn’t give them too many problems. | |
RFJ: Well done SGR&AC great race, much improved over old course. Thanks to all the marshalls. For an extra quid or two, can we have chip timing next year? Got a nice new PB today too. Thanks. |
Doric Lass: Good 10k with PB potential. |
| Katherine Walters: Well organised race. A very pretty route, with good PB potential, I managed to knock 2 1/2 minutes of my previous PB. | |
Diana D: Improved course & excellent organisation. Was not on top form, so struggled a bit. But I liked the course (despite those two hills!) and will be back to do it again, hopefully feeling 100%. The weather was lucky, the organisation was great. |
| Steve Blewett: Lack of toilets. | |
Nicedad: Excellent way to spend a bright, winter Sunday morning. Having taken part in several local races for the past two years (except this one) to be honest I was surprised why this race was fully booked well in advance. Now having taken part I see why. This is a well organised and scenically attractive race. Yes we were lucky with the weather which, although was a little chilly to start, was ideal once we were underway. The marshals were very supportive. If I have a minor gripe it is that the water station at the end could have been better located/signposted. Will be back next year. Well done Stubbington. |
Crazyrunner: Great new course, just a couple of tweeks needed. The new course is a massive improvement on the old one, with most of it traffic free. |
Runamock: Great new course with the renowned Stubbington Green exemplary organisation. As ever, Stubbington Green have executed the running of a great race like clockwork. Pre-race organisation was slick, as was the new course despite a couple of inclines that had a little sting to them. The start was much better than last year allowing runners to get away better, even though some slow runners still insist in being at the front. Thankfully the weather had calmed down from the night before and meant that quick times were possible, myself included taking over a minute off. Overall a great race, the race director and his team of marshalls should take great pride in what they have accomplished, it is fully deserved. See you next year. |
Jenny Kitchen: Blue skies, scenic route.....perfect setting for a perfect race! What a great start to my racing year. I really liked the new Stubbington 10k race route, much prettier than previous, although the hills posed a slight challenge. Well organised and thanks to the cheery, supportive marshalls. See you next year! |
| Hard: Fantastic race, well done to everyone involved in organising it. Great course, really well marshalled (thanks everyone), great organisation, thanks to the race director and everyone else for overcoming all the obstacles and putting on a fab race. Even the weather turned out to be perfect! | |
Susie MacGregor: Well organised and a friendly atmosphere. |
| Gottorun: A great morning run. This is always a favourite regardless of time taken to run. The new course was good but not quick for me. Marshalls were all friendly and encouraging. Thanks Stubbington runners. | |
The Burch: Thank you SGRAC - much prefer this course to the previous! |
Tony Parker: Great marshalling and a good course. |
Tony Smith: Great Race, big thanks to Stubbington Green Club for organising and all the marshals. Only slight criticism and nothing Stubbington could have helped...but why do people who know they are not going to finish at the front, start at the front? Apart from that I enjoyed the course, the 2 short hills were a bit of a challenge, I found the whole course to be traffic free. Well done again and I'll be back next year. |
| Artie: The whole set up was excellent and very professional. | |
Ceasar: Slightly confusing on the new start as no one around me knew if we had started or not! |
Elaine Johnson: I would just like to say that I enjoyed the new course today and thank you to all who organised the event. The only concern I have is the regulation regarding mp3 players. I had registered for the race through the Runners World web page so I did not know about the ban on headphones. There was no mention of this on the letter which accompanied my race confirmation. I was 'told off' on the way round the course and told I would be disqualified if I did not remove them. I did remove them once told but I genuinely did not know about this rule. I saw no notices up around the race area and no one had mentioned it to me before the start of the race. I now see that it is mentioned on the website, but I had not been on the site before the race. I am not against the ruling if that is what is required, I am just concerned that the information was not communicated and I could have been disqualified without knowing I had done anything wrong. |
Jackie Ducker: (Winchester & District AC) Just a note to say thanks for organising a great race yesterday - enjoyed the course and atmosphere. |
Robin Houghton: You have done a great job in finding new course after being forced off the old course by the outrageous police fees. I have read some of the other comments and agree completely with the exception of request for chip timing. Another great mug as the giveaway. Thanks, I will be back to beat the hills. |
Fleur Rush: Loved the new course, so picturesque. Will forgive you for the hills! We also experienced some confusion at the start. We never heard the start gun and only realised that it had started when a marshal kindly told us that we were just crossing the start line. Loved the mug, will add to last years which is in frequent use. All involved in the race organisation did a great job. Will travel all the way from Frome, Somerset again! |
Dee Ferrett: Thank you to all the organisers, great race. I enjoyed the new route, even the small hills. |
Martin Billett: (Midas Runners, Farnborough) Many thanks to you all for hosting a great race - great course, well marshalled and very friendly! We’ll be back next year - enjoy your runs this spring! |
Poppy Hatfield: My first venture to Stubbington was a pleasure, very well organised, marshalls were very supportive especially for us slightly slower runners, and very thoughful to shout the splits at 5k. Only disappointment - I couldn't stay for cake! I'll be back next year. |
Derek Smith: (Winchester & District A.C.) Congratulations on another well organised event. I must say I enjoyed the new course much better than the old one. It is good to have a relatively traffic-free route. Will definitely put it in my diary for next year. Keep up the good work. |
| Fareham Crusaders: A fantastic event. The course is a great improvement on the previous route and the race remains one of the most well organised and professional events in the local area. Credit is due to Stubbington Green Runners in all of their efforts to ensure an outstanding event organised for runners, by runners. All the very best. | |
Nick Carter: (City of Portsmouth AC) Haven’t done this race for a few years..in fact, any race for a few years and I was looking for a decent time. (for me that is). I was never going to get a pb thanks to those lovely inclines but what a great course! Excellent organisation and very friendly atmosphere. I'm very glad that I managed to get an entry and I will most certainly be back next year. Thanks to all involved for a great race. |
Mark Campion: (Portsmouth Joggers) Just wanted to say what an excellent race this was, the course was very pleasing on the eye with a little taste of everything, including a few inclines which may have added just a little to the time but well worth it. Well organised and just simply a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I would prefer a medal to a mug though as I'm running out of kitchen cupboards to stock them, a medal takes up far less room ! Many thanks and see you next year..... |
Eunice Hoare: Well I've done the old course for the first time last year and have now done the new course this year which I much prefer. Lovely route, well organised, well done to everyone involved. |
Lindsey Nottingham: Very well organised and supportive marshalls all along the route. Great scenery and it was nice to run a rural route without fear of traffic. |
Andy Sly: A great new course – excellent marshalling as usual. Where was the start?!!! You need the signs at the start to encourage people to start in the right timings – not left on the side. Thanks |
Shropshire Lass: Big Thanks to Gary, and all the Stubbies involved, for a great 10km race today. The weather couldn’t have been much better and the course was good- it was nice to get support from people outside their houses as well as encouragement from the marshalls. I even managed a PB...just! |
Young Jedi: What a great new course. Must be one of the best 10ks in the country. It offers everything. For a bit more cost I'd pay for a chip. For next year the start would be better to have starting pens. Too many slow/very slow runners who simply were in the way at the start without sounding rude. Our marhalls are better than yours (GRR). Great race though. I wish we could close a few more roads. |
Crazy Caz: Wow, what a race! Loved the new route, loved the shut roads and the country lanes. Great to have a bit of coast too. Marshals were fantastic and they even organised good weather for us! Even love the mug, which was more exciting than last year’s mug. The start wasn’t the best that I have seen, but I guess that's one of the disadvantages of a popular race - everyone wants to do it! I'm not really sure what went wrong, but there were lots of club runners in the wrong places at the start - beginners I can forgive because they don’t know any better, but the majority of club runners should have a better idea of where they should be. Being a slow runner and starting from the back, I would also be prepared to pay a bit more for chip timing. It took me over 30 seconds to cross the start line - not a problem this time as I beat my PB by at least a minute (Garmin time) so even with the delay I did well. When do entries open for next year? (And the Gosport marshals were just as good, but Stubby has a nicer course) |
Fat Fyes: And I have to say the Stubby orange juice providers are the best in the country Not that I'm biased! Well done everyone...good day had by all! |
Mike Elliott: Well organised on quiet roads. |
Michael Rix: New Year, new course, same great organisation. Fine race. Course was ok with no big surprises. Loved the seaside view at about 4 miles. Pity start was congested but this could be alleviated with chip timing in years to come. Will certainly race it again. |
| David Langrish: Excellent organisation, great course, blue skies and light breeze, PB... | |
Gary McCawley: A New Challenge For 2009. Firstly thanks to SGR for not giving up and organising a 2009 event. An excellent new course which was traffic free for about 8K. The course took in quiet roads and country lanes. Highlight was the view across the bay at 6-7K. Well marshalled with lots of encouragement. The new course is far better than the old, so perhaps the police and council did us a favour. |
Yoda7: Excellent organisation, well-marshalled and clearly-marked course with great atmosphere. The chilly wind and slightly challenging undulations didn't spoil a really good event. Agree with earlier comment that chip timings would help and might avoid start line bunching. Minor gripe: I couldn't locate any water, etc at the finish. But very well done Stubbington Green and all your supporters. |
| Lewis Chalk: What a fantastic event yesterday was.....without doubt the most fun atmosphere I have sampled in my short running career. The career I am keen to extend as far as I can, really buzzing from my times and with more training and events I am really keen to do sub 60 in great south (I am joining the club for summer events and socials - i got the bug!) | |
| Colin Crawford: Just a quick e-mail to say a very big thank you to the organisers of yesterdays 10K, the ambulance team, and especially the Head Sports Therapist whose name I have forgotten. Having run smoothly to the 4k point my run became a run/limp to the 5k point until I suffered a severe pain in my left calf leaving me hardly able to walk. Having run Marathons all over the world and never having had to pull out this was a completely different experience. The nearest Marshall quickly advised I should wait for the ambulance team, who then provided an ice pack and a humorous ride back to the finish following the tail enders. On return having refused the offer of an ambulance ride home, the on-site Sports Therapist took over; she quickly got to the route of the problem (tears/pulls to some small tendons at the bottom of my calf) and following a number of light stretching exercises a gentle massage and amazingly a thick piece of cardboard in my left shoe got me mobile again. The bad news is no running for a minimum of 3 weeks (today I can just about hobble). But following the excellent support from all concerned especially the head of the Sports Therapist team I have marked the Stubbington 10K down as a must for the start of next years running programme. Best Wishes to you, your club, and all concerned for 2009. | |
| Jane Adlard: Great course, fantastic organisation and lovely marshalls! Well done Gary and the team for putting on such an excellent 10k (and I managed to pb by over 6.5 minutes). | |
| Lisa Smith: (Farnham Runners) What a lovely sunny morning for your new route. A really great run with lots to see. Thank you also for the many encouraging marshalls along the way. | |
| Steve Goodwin: (Winchester & District AC) Due to an injury that is preventing me from running at the moment, I decided to “power walk” the race so probably had more time to appreciate what a superbly organised race this was. The course was virtually traffic-free, more scenic and I cannot praise the marshals too highly for their vocal encouragement and support to all the competitors. Well done to everyone who made this race happen. | |
| Chris Setters: (Winchester & District AC) Thanks for a great race. Well organised, really nice course with a couple of playful hills, and a great prize (a mug) at the end. It must have taken some organisation to get the course so free of traffic, and it was quite good to have a short jog to the start. Same again next year would be great. | |
| Jenny Kitchen: This was my second year at Stubbington and I really enjoyed the new route....blissful to be nearly entirely traffic-free and what glorious views across the Solent. As a stranger to those parts, I have discovered Titchfield Haven and plan to go back down to explore some more! I don’t normally like running hills but the new course, with the couple of challenging inclines, made it a more of an interesting race, and a few slopes always seem to help my calf muscles anyway? Many thanks, hope to be back next year! | |
| David and Sandra Abrams: Great new route - very scenic, and good to be so traffic-free. Start rather congested, making official times quite adrift. Took me 40secs to get to the start from the off! Chip timing would be a great bonus for which the extra couple of pounds would be worth it. Since Titchfield Road was closed, could we not have assembled there, using the cut through by the vets surgery? That might make it a smoother start, as would using the estimated time placards left on the pavement! Overall, a vast improvement on the old route and a great run. A special thank you to all marshalls and organisers – didn’t have the breath to do it on the way round. Looking forward to next years’. | |
| Janice Goble: Southampton Tri Club: Really enjoyed the new course, great organisation and especially the friendly, supportive marshalls. Closed roads was a benefit, this helped the safety aspect of this large race. I’m sure your rules state that no Ipods should be worn, those that were wearing them should be reminded that they can cause a danger to themselves and other runners/road users, it was a shame that many didn't comply with this. Perhaps this a firmer message next year. Thanks again for a great day out. | |
| Paul Cameron: I think the course is soooo much better than the old one. I used to hate the finishing slog along that long road. It’s now much nicer. Marshalls superb too, with slick organisation. My apologies to the marshall at the finish for nearly buggering the order up when I collapsed and puked my guts up!! Too much coffee methinks. No PB, but got 2nd place, so over the moon. See you all at Ryde? | |
| Lee Rhodes: A good day, well organised and very lucky with the weather. | |
| Choisty: A really good 10km without feeling like a Goose. The organisation of a new (almost) traffic-free course when most races are struggling to overcome red tape in such a faultless way is nothing short of a race director’s miracle. The course is better, if a little slower. The marshalls were excellent and in abundant supply. Also congratulations for not succumbing to chip timing despite the numbers, it's nice not to feel like a goose. | |
| Lightly Creased: Great new course, superb organisation, well done SGRAC! Having missed last year through my own silly fault, I was pleased to be on the start line this year. The new course is great and I don’t think the couple of hills will prevent PBs - in fact I got one! For me, this is always the first road race of the year and will always remain special as my first 10k ever some years ago and the fact I've set a PB four times out of five The organisation really is first class and the colour coded numbers worked well, I thought - however I suspect people are sometimes too optimistic in their forecast times! This is one of the great races. | |
Diana D: I too thought it was a much improved course - really scenic, which is a good distraction if the going gets tough. No PB for me, must make a note NOT to give blood in the week before a race next time. |
Insomniac: Average 10k road race. |
Guy Henshaw: Stub-tacular! |
Lee Rhodes: A good day, well organised and very lucky with the weather. |
| Ken Johnson: I haven’t run a half marathon or a 10k this century! So I was pleased just to get around, and I was inspired by the 'Vets' disappearing over the horizon at a great rate of knots. I must try harder! Everything went really smoothly, which is testimony to how well it was all organised. Someone has a sense of humour though with the race finish being outside the local kebab shop! | |
Sam McTaggart: The whole event was so well organised and co-ordinated, everything was thought of to make sure that all runners had a most enjoyable time. The atmosphere was so friendly and everyone just mucked in and helped each other. The course was great with a good variety of hill, straight, road and shoreline. The sun was on top form too which was a winner! A very big well done to all, see ya next time. Well done to all those from Spirit Health Club Fareham. |
| Darren Hare: Course was good, weather was a bonus, the only problem was the actual start line was not clear for the starters further back. Look forward to next year. | |
Judy Byrne: Great new course. Great weather. Thanks SGRAC. |
| Gez Day: Hello there! Since I enjoyed the new Stubbington 10K course so much, I thought I’d drop a line to say so! Not that the original course was terrible, but I found the new one very enjoyable: probably lost minutes of my (frankly mediocre time) due to the scenery! The extra effort taken on organising this was appreciated: by way of feedback, I would be happy to pay that little bit more to support the extra money that may be required to keep it! Thanks again. | |
Andy Smith: Another excellent event, superbly organised with brilliant marshals enthusiastic as ever. The start was a little confused but I'm not sure introducing chip timing is right for this event. It may deter some of the many fun runners and this race has a great mix of all abilities and a real family feel about it. The new course is great and I agree with those who are glad to see the back of the long home straight along Gosport Road. Thanks to all concerned, see you next year. |
| Barry Evans: Slick. Great new course - It was weird as I often train along this route but have now raced it. Organisation was faultless well done everyone. | |
Mike Williamson: Congratulations on a fantastic race. Great course, slick organisation and the best mug I’ve ever got at a race. I’ll be back next year and if you can get the same weather again I’d be obliged. |
| Giz: Loved the new course, so much better than the old one, taking in the prettier stretch of seaside as well, great organization, and, as always, great cakes (purely medicinal!) to aid recovery. Many thanks to all involved. |
