Overton 5 Miles
Race 1 of the Hants Road Race League 2009-2010.
With 30 Stubbies heading to North Hampshire we had our best start ever to a HRRL season. Lots of green vests, lot’s of p.b’s and lot’s of quality, summed up the Overton 5 mile race on Saturday afternoon.
It shouldn’t really be a p.b course, as a steep hill that you run up twice isn’t what you would choose, but good conditions and one of the best downhill finishes around, meant that many Stubbies smashed their best 5 mile times. There were probably many more, but I know that Mark, Andy, Dave, Graham, Susie, Tina, Gill, Georgie and Sharon all achieved p.b’s. In fact of the seven who ran here both last year and this year, Mark, me, Graham, Tim, Susie and Georgie all ran quicker this year. Graham and Susie by almost two mins and Georgie by over two mins!
Our top performer was again Mark, in 2nd place, and he was well supported by Lewis in 9th and Andy in 13th. Susie led home our ladies with a brilliant run for 7th place, and she was well supported by Tina in 19th place, who was in Glen’s beginners group only a few months ago!
These fast individual times produced excellent team results. With Mark, Lewis and Andy battling it out for top ten places at the front of the race, it was Dave who headed a stream of green vests at the half hour mark to close the A team in 2nd place in Div 1. Despite my last mile being 5min 21 secs I couldn’t make the B team, as more consistent 6 minute miling from Mike, Richard, Tony and Graham ensured we were also 2nd B team in Div 1 of the B league.
The ladies A team of Susie, Tina and Sally also received a team prize with 3rd place in Div1. Not to be outdone our next three ladies, Gill, Georgie and Jaz all had superb runs taking the B team to 3rd place in Div 1 of the B league.
After this fantastic start for both the ladies and the men it would be great to maintain it at Victory 5 mile in a couple of weeks. It is the day after the Test Way relay, where I think we have 36 Stubbies running, and although I know that Andy, Lewis, Graham, Tina, Sally and Georgie are hoping to recover and run both days, if you aren’t running the test Way relay it would be great if you could get involved and run the fast flat 5 miler at the Mountbatten Centre.
We are hoping to have a little social get together after, similar to the successful RR10 ones, so watch the website for details. Mike Harper.
I'm sure you will get a few emails about today but I just wanted to say that despite the slow start I got round in 37:13 (my time) and achieved a PB. So I am very happy and looking forward to the next HRRL event in Portsmouth. Cheers, John Blake.
