Stubbington Green Runners

Victory 5 Miles – HRRL Race 2

Susie McGregor & Mark Le Gassick

WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE, WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE! It’s unlikely that either of our local football teams will be singing this in the foreseeable future, so it’s currently the Stubbington’s Men’s team that has to make the most of it!

Outstanding performances from almost all of our 33 runners at Victory, saw the Men’s A team win the race and leap to the top of the Hampshire Division 1. Not only did the top boys perform well, as the strength in depth told, with our B team just pipping Portsmouth Joggers by one place to also win, and head to the top of the B league Div 1.

Not to be outdone the ladies also performed superbly, and again with strength in depth, as they finished 2nd A team and 2nd B team. This puts both our Ladies teams in third place in their top Divisions.

Perfect conditions on this fast course, meant that almost everyone ran a p.b, myself, Ray and Phil M being the three exceptions! At least Phil and Ray had run the day before at the relay!

Our winning team of Mark, Lewis, Andy and Graham all ran faster than ever before, even more impressive as Lewis, Andy and Graham had all raced the day before at the Test Way relay! Our B team was Dave, Sam, Tim S and me, with both Tim S and Tim C racing the previous day. Nick went one better, by running the relay on Saturday, the Stansted Slog –that’s 13 miles – in the morning before dashing to the Mountbatten Centre to manage a very respectable 36 minutes for 5 miles!

Not to be outdone, to my knowledge at least 5 of the ladies had raced the day before in the Test Way relay. Lucy M, Jaz, Tina, Geraldine and Georgie, ran both days and I think all ran p.b’s? Top performance must go to Jaz, who ran her leg on Saturday, then buddied Liz on a later leg, helped push our B team to 2nd place and still ran quicker than a few weeks ago at Overton! The B team was completed with both Lucy M and Georgie running p.b’s.

Our first three ladies were Susie, Tina and Lucy S, who just kept ahead of Georgie, to complete the A team. It was great to see Lucy racing again after a long and frustrating Achilles injury.

We managed to pip Winchester to 2nd place, which is no small achievement, as they won 10 of the 12 races last season and were 2nd in the other two!
What a star Tina is proving to be. After racing about 6 miles with Glen trying to hang on, on Saturday afternoon, she was almost a minute quicker than at Overton, so is now averaging under 7 min miles. This only a few months out of Glen’s group, and I think every time she has run, she has had a team prize!

Our ladies Captain is absolutely flying at the moment. Susie spent all day Saturday co-ordinating the relay teams and encouraging everyone, and then ran her fastest ever 5 miler. She was the first over 40 lady here, as she led our team from the front. Only the men’s A and B team runners kept ahead of her, and although Mark Le Gas might still be out of her sight, me and Chris Hall are looking nervously over our shoulder!

Let’s hope we can keep this fantastic start going. The three Autumn races are the Solent half, Lordshill 10 Mile and the Gosport half.
The Solent half is almost full, so if you can manage 13 miles on this pleasant New Forest run then you can enter online this weekend! Mike Harper.
