Solent Half Marathon – Hants Road Race League Race 3
It was another extremely successful day on the roads of Hampshire for both our Ladies and Mens teams.
A special mention to Tina and Kev, who both counted towards our table topping B teams, when due to illness, most people wouldn’t have got out of bed on a Sunday morning, let alone race a Half marathon! Two other stars were Chris and Jaz, who had both raced at Farley Mount on Saturday afternoon. Despite this, and Chris finding 5 or 6 new pubs to visit on Saturday evening, I still couldn’t hang onto him after 11 miles!
As usual every place counts, and superb p.b’s from Susie, Annie and Georgie, meant our ‘A’ team finished 4th on the day, pipping Eastleigh by one point, and moving to 2nd team just behind Eastleigh in Div 1.
Our ladies ‘B’ team again just headed Fareham and Soton, as they went top of the B league.
Tina and Georgie kept each other going, and Sally stepped in to give us a complete team, a week after the tough Clarendon Half, and Jaz still had a smile on her face as she pulled away from a large group of rivals on the last hill.
The Men are now top of both the ‘A’ league and the ‘B’ league so having the strength in depth is obviously helping and with another great turnout, 18 guys ran here, on a weekend when we also had a good quality turnout at the Farley xc.
Our first four were Lewis, his last race before the New York marathon, ever improving Graham, evergreen Mike, and forever in front of me and Ray, our Chairman Chris. Completing the B team with me and Ray, was Tony and Kev. Tony is only a week away from the Abingdon marathon so paced this at 7 min miles, and Kev was helped up from the ground several times by a concerned Tim Crumpton. Quite a few other p.b’s, I saw Phil with a strong finish, looking good for the Great South, and Paul and Alan, probably like most of us, had a pretty good ten miles, and were holding on a bit for the last three, but still got under that target of two hours.
Let’s try and keep this fantastic start going. We will be very strong at our own 10k in January, so if you can do one of the two HRRL before that we may well go into the New Year still leading the tables!
The two Races are LORDSHILL TEN Miles on NOV 1st and GOSPORT HALF MARATHON on NOV 15th.
Both are fast courses, so you need to get your entries off very soon, if not NOW! Mike Harper.
