Steyning Stinger

Caroline & Glen Street

THE Steyning Stinger is a cross-country hill run or walk through the South Downs between Worthing and Shoreham-by-Sea.

It was begun in 2002 and consists of both a tough marathon and equally challenging half marathon, organised by Steyning AC.

Stubbies Caroline and Glen Street took on the Stinger over the shorter half marathon route. The 13.2-mile race includes two 'stings' which saw Glen get his way round in a time of 2hrs 9min 19sec for 85th place and Caroline completed the course in 3:03.08 for 166th position.

A total of 183 runners took part with Fraser Dawson from Mole Vale AC in Surrey winning with a time of 1:28.39, which gives a measure of how tough the course was. Jane Lawrence from Worthing Striders, who crossed the finish line in 20th place, took the honour of the first lady runner in a time of 1:46.47.

No Stubbies were foolhardy enough to tackle the marathon which was won by Richard Gurd from Windle Valley Runners in 3hrs 16min 00sec, and 27th placed Gillian Senior from Ashford & District RRC was the leading lady with 4:08.37. A total of 114 runners took part in the marathon which had four stings in the tail.
