SGR & AC 10k
IT is all change for the Stubbington 10km – one of the biggest road races on the south coast and the first major 10km of the year.
This year’s event, which takes place on Sunday, January 18th, has had a complete facelift with a new and exciting course.
“The Stubbington 10km has been organised by Stubbington Green Runners & AC for more than 20 years and we felt that now was time for a change,” explained race director, Gary Littlecott.
“In truth we have had to change the race route because of increasing problems with traffic and concerns for the safety of runners. So for the past year we have been working extremely closely with Fareham Borough Council and Hampshire Police to come up with a new course.
“And I’m confident that what we have conjured up is an interesting and picturesque run, with a few surprises along the way.” The Stubbington 10km, which is the sixth of 12 events in the Hampshire Road Race League, attracted a record field of 1,109 runners in 2008.
The 2009 version will once again be based at the Crofton Community Centre in Stubbington, but with a new start some two minutes’ walk away on Titchfield Road near the Crofton Club.
Runners will assemble as before in Stubbington Square at 9.45am before being led to the start line for the 10am start. The race will take runners towards Titchfield, turning into Bridge Street and through the village up Coach Hill.
It’s then a two mile run along Posbrook Lane towards the Meon Foreshore. There won’t be much time to admire the Solent as the race moves into the closing stages along Cliff Road and into Hill Head for a run-in towards Stubbington, finishing in the village square, a short 3 minute video of the new route is available to view from here.
Entries open in September, with a fee of £9.00 for UKA affiliated runners and £11.00 for unaffiliated runners. Be warned, get in quick! The 2008 race was sold out by November.
