RR10 - Deerleap Inclosure
ZIPPY Grice outran the midgies and made the most of the fine summer’s evening for the second round of the RR10 at Ashurst.
After a record turn-out of 52 runners at the summer opener in Netley, there was another sizeable Stubbie contingent for the New Forest fixture over 5.1 miles of forest track and ankle-deep muddy grassland.
Temperatures were in the 70s for the race which attracted 369 runners to Deerleap Inclosure.
Stubbington were without a number of runners who were either competing in the Promenade 5km series in Portsmouth or preparing for this weekend’s Hampshire Athletics Championships, but the green-vested contingent still provided a strong showing.
Zippy led the Stubbies home in 15th place to add to his 10th in the Netley opener, as Southampton Running Club’s Nick Buis chalked up victory in the New Forest.
Ray Gunner and Andy Simpson followed in 27th and 28th places with Tim Sullivan in 43rd and Darrell Milner in 50th to complete the scoring. Stubbington’s men’s A team finished sixth on the night and after two races lie 7th equal with Totton Running Club.
In the women’s race, it was once again Lucy Simmons who shone brightest for Stubbington by finishing a fantastic fourth. Lucy said she is enjoying her running currently without putting too much pressure on herself, and the results are there to see. On the back of a second place at Netley, and with Winchester & District AC putting out their stronger runners, competition was tougher at the front of the pack.
Georgia McNicol from Winchester won the race, and behind Lucy, Louise James and debut-making Tara Doherty in 16th and 17th places helped the ladies to third place on the evening and the Stubbettes lead overall after two races equal with Winchester.
