Marlborough Downs Challenge

Kathy McKain

THE Marlborough Downs Challenge in Wiltshire is one of the most picturesque runs in the region, and so it proved for a group of Stubbies who headed to Wiltshire.

The colour of bluebells, the smell of the wild garlic, the ancient beech trees, the views across the downs and the Pewsey Vale, the grazing sheep, plus the wonder of the ancient Wansdyke and Avebury stone circle, it adds up to a spectacular 20-mile race in the countryside.

This year more than 300 runners took part in the race which started at Marlborough College.

A fella by the name of Chris Hall – not THE Chris Hall since he was at Wembley Stadium at the time cheering on the mighty Pompey – won the race in a time of 2hrs 13min 00sec.

Paul Hailwood had a great run to finish 65th in 3:09.10, and later described the event as “the best day of my running life”. He added: “Fantastic organisation and unbelievable views, strongly recommended. Thanks to Tracy (Jarvis) for recommending this event and thanks to Glen (Street) who gave me new legs.
“I made my time with more ups than downs - I was pleased.”

Just over an hour behind them, a trio of Stubbies crossed the finish line with Kathy McKain, Tracie Jarvis and Sue Robinson clocking 4:20.13 for 120th, 121st and 122nd places. Sue Sleath from Hardley Runners won the women’s race in a time of 2:30.25.
