Broad Town 5
HAS he no shame at all?!! Dave King found himself involved in a sprint finish with a 10-year-old in a five-mile road race in Wiltshire - and he wouldn't even let the kid win.
The Green Runner editor was giving his newly-acquired pregnant belly a rare racing run-out at the Broad Town 5 near Swindon. The race was part of a school fete and attracted a good quality field of 157 runners for a challenging five-mile race along country lanes in the Wiltshire countryside.
"I was chasing this little kid for most of the way," said Dave. "Going up the final hill, the little kid started to complain of a stitch. So, with one eye on not being humiliated by the whipper-snapper, I told him to stick with me and I'd get him to the finish.
"We were running stride for stride into the school playing field, and that's when I showed the youngster my devastating finishing kick! Well, it's good to learn disappointment at an early age!!!"
Dave finished 37th in a time of 34min 58sec, with his young compatriot just a second behind. The race was won by Gary O'Brien from Swindon Striders in 27.15, with third-placed Amy Chalk from Bristol & West AC was first lady to finish with 27.41.
