Stubbington Green Runners

Stubbington Report

TOBY LAMBERT toasted his second successive victory at the Stubbington 10km road race.

The Alton Runner set a blazing pace on a day when running conditions were perfect - sunshine, a blue sky, plus a little wind on a beautiful winter's day.

Lambert led from the start to win in a time of 30min 21sec, leaving clear water between himself and second-placed Andy Morgan-Lee, making a welcome return after a long lay-off through injury, who finished strongly more than a minute behind the North Hampshire runner in 31.25.

A record-breaking total of 1,063 runners took part in the race which started and finished in Stubbington village.

For the first time, race director Gary Littlecott chose to split the start into two groups who filtered either side of the village roundabout before heading down Stubbington Road towards the Lee-on-the-Solent seafront.

The initiative was introduced to avoid the congestion experienced by runners in previous years - and it seems, judging by post-race comments, that the idea drew a mixed reception, with some runners unhappy that they were unable to get away quickly.

Lambert certainly got away quickly, following the huge Boarhunt Garage recovery vehicle which acted as a formidable lead-out vehicle. He was very soon on his own in a repeat of the race 12 months ago, with Southampton Running Club's Morgan-Lee chasing hard, along with Winchester & District's Nick Anderson.

The one disappointing aspect of the race was the absence of Stubbingtons Andy Vernon, the former European Junior Cross Country silver medallist, who was forced to pull out of the race late on with a shin injury. He would have given Lambert a run for his money and very possibly taken the winner's time to under the magic 30 minute mark.

Morgan-Lee, who has missed five months with injury picked up following an RR10 race at Stoke Park Wood in the summer, was third a year ago at Stubbington, but held of Anderson in a spring finish.

Belgrave Harrier, Hassan Raidi, a late entry to the race, and who has a sub-30 minute personal best, was fourth in 32.03, and such was the high standard of the race that Chichester Runners' James Baker, who has been winning races across the south coast at will this season, could only make fifth in 32.19.

Stubbington's Mark Le Gassick, second at Stubbington a year ago, was seventh in 32.43, helping the host club to team victory in an event which formed part of the Hampshire Road Race League and which also acted as the Hampshire 10km Championship.

John Rawlins was the second Stubbington runner home in 32.55, a new personal best by some considerable margin, Michael Breed was 12th in 33.24, Tony Allen, who won the Vet 40 category was 17th in 33.45, and Ross Lamport completed the scoring in 21st place with a time of 34.22.

Stubbington's B team were sixth, and they were helped by talented teenager Chris Furnell who finished 70th in 38.18, and was the second junior.

For the women, Poole's Louise Damen made up for her mishap at the Hampshire Cross Country Championships in Basingstoke last week when a wrong turn cost her the race. Another late entry in order to secure a fast 10km time for national events later this year, she was first home in a time of 33.34

However the Hampshire 10km women's title went to Scottish international, Shona Crombie-Hicks, who competed in the marathon at the Commonwealth Games last year. She has recently moved to Winchester & District AC from Bourton Road Runners in the west country to train with Nick Anderson, and she finished second overall in 35.03, and was the first Vet35 runner.

Winchester predictably sewed up the team title with Karen Hazlitt third in 35.13, Emma Patel fifth in 37.09, Kaye Mansbridge eighth in 37.40 and ex-Stubby Katharine Jones, who won the Vet 45 honours, 11th in 38.52.

Stubbington's women, who are currently leading Division 2 of the Hampshire Road Race League, strengthened their position with some fine performances. They finished 16th in the team standings.

Lauren Coates was the first Stubbington runner to score in 73rd place in 47.41, followed by Janet Marshall who was five seconds behind in 74th and who was 12th Vet 45. Kay Sadler completed the Stubbington ladies' scoring in a time of 50.25.
