Salisbury Races

TWO of the big races staged in Salisbury this year have been dropped.

The popular City of Salisbury 10km event, which was originally scheduled for last weekend - February 18th, along with the 10 mile race, which was provisionally planned for June this year, will both not take place.

Ludo Macaulay from Salisbury Fire Station, the man behind the races, said that the decision was made after a period of consultation and consolidation to drop two events in the popular Salisbury Road Race Series "in favour of concentrating our time, resources and efforts on improving two growing events."

Ludo added: "2007 will give us new challenges at a time when pressures on individuals, availability of venue facilities and workforce continue to influence what we would like to achieve."

He said there was also the pressure to deliver races with met UK Road Race permit requirements.

Although over almost 17 years these races were not profit driven, with one of the lowest entry fees around, they never made a loss and contributed significantly to the Fire Services Charity.

Ludo explained: "For 2007, we feel we need to up the provision to cope with existing entries, seeking sympathetic sponsors and continued efficient support for the charity work which we have been so proud of."

The two main races Ludo will be organising this year are the 12th Salisbury 5-4-3-2-1 Trail runs on Sunday, August 12. This is a trail marathon, as well as runs over 30km, 20km, 10km, plus supporting walks on the same routes. There will also be a fun 5km event.

Then on Sunday, October 28th , there will be the City of Salisbury Half Marathon.
