Round The Lakes 10km

BOXING Day should be all about shaking off the excesses of Christmas Day and for a veritable feast of festive Stubbies, all roads led to Poole.

A field of 335 runners took part in the popular Round The Lakes 10km, which is based in Poole Park and organised by Poole Athletic Club. Such is the popularity of the event that many runners were turned away when the final few on the day entries were quickly snaffled up.

Unseasonally warm weather greeted the race which consisted of four laps around the main boating lake in the park, and then a final short loop around the cricket field.

Darrell Milner led the Stubbington team home in a time of 39min 23sec for 40th place, followed by the Laverys. Bev claimed 60th place in 41.35, pipping Malcolm to 41.44 and 63rd place and the washing up for the rest of Boxing Day.

Paul Winter picked up his bottle of wine at the finish after crossing the line in a time of 51.09 and 216th,  Dave King, pushing son Ross in his sports stroller, claimed 241st spot in 52.26, Verity Wright was just behind in 244th with 52.29 and Liz Hall placed 286th with 57.17.

The race was won by Peter Freedman from Tavistock AC in 31.10, and the first lady home was Holly Rush from Team Bath AC in 34.30.

Meanwhile, does anyone remember Rex Legge? He was running at Poole in and sends his regards to everyone in the club that remembers him. Rex moved down to Poole four years ago and is racing for Poole AC. He is still running well and completed the 10km course in 42mins 48secs. He also completed his debut marathon (the London) at the age of 60 in just 3 hours 17 minutes - not bad for a male vet 60!
