Stubbington Green Runners

Newquay Track & Field - 2nd June 2007

THE weather may have been scorching on the south coast, but it was wet and miserable in Cornwall for the latest round of the Southern League track and field.

On a day when many of Stubbington's runners were browning their golden torsos on the South Downs, Mike Harper led a talented squad to Newquay for this Division Three West fixture.

Mike had previously feared that this meeting may be a tough task for Stubbington, with the host club and Devon neighbours Plymouth sure to field strong squads, and so despite the long journey the men in green might struggle.

But far from it. In the Cornish town where surfing is all the rage, Stubbington's track and field squad rode the crest of a wave with a fine second place behind Newquay & Par AC. Just 23 points separated the two teams, with Plymouth third and a combined Wimborne/Poole AC squad in a distant fourth.

On the track, Stubbington completed a winning double in both strings of the 100m through Mike Williams (11.4sec) and Dan Dell (11.9), and both runners repeated the feat over 400m with Mike clocking 51.3 and Dan 54.1.

The next round of the Southern League season takes place on June 23rd in Swindon when Stubbington take on the Wiltshire club as well as teams from Basingstoke, Wimborne/Poole, and Plymouth. If you would like to compete for the club, then contact Mike at: theharpers12@hotmail.com
