Stubbington Green Runners

Marwell 10km

STUBBINGTON'S men and women's teams were in a tigerish mood as they finished in second and third place in the team rankings at the Marwell Zoo 10k race.

The popular event, organised by Eastleigh Runners, attracted a field of 930 runners along a tough a winding course, which included the infamous Owslebury Hill, and the sun-drenched undulating lanes around Owslebury. With warm conditions, it made running tough.

Andy Morgan-Lee from Southampton Running Club won the event in a time of 32min 10sec, beating last year's winner, James Baker from Chichester AC, by 39 seconds. Stubbington's Mark Le Gassick was third in 33.17 with team-mate Zippy Grice eighth in 35.21. Barry Hards was 23rd in 38.44 and fifth Vet 40, and Richard Thomas, was just a second behind in 24th place with 38.45 and sixth Vet 40. Stubbington placed second in the team standings behind Southampton RC.

For both Zippy and Richard, both had run either side of the three-hour mark a week earlier at the Flora London Marathon.

The ladies race was won by Karrie Blake from Denmead Striders in a superb time of 39.25, closely followed by Lesley Locks from Hart Road Runners. Sue True from Winchester AC took third place.

Susie MacGregor and Bev Lavery went stride for stride in the race, with Susie opening up at the finish to pip her team-mate in fifth with 43.33 to Bev's 43.48. The ladies were second and third in the Vet 35 age group.

Janet Marshall was Stubbington's third scorer in 37th with 48.16 (6th Vet 45), and just behind her was Louise James in 38th in 48.25.

Stubbington's ladies came third in the team event behind winners Denmead Striders.

The event hopes to raise a substantial amount for the Marwell Preservation Trust who in turn will use the cash to support the EAZA Madagascar Campaign.
