Guy Fawkes 10
REMEMBER, remember the fifth of November. They certainly do at the historic Ripley Castle just outside of Harrogate in Yorkshire and which has its roots firmly set in the Gunpowder Plot.
James I stayed at the castle in 1603. By 1605, the Ingilbys who own the castle, were plotting to kill him: nine of the eleven known conspirators of the Gunpowder Plot were close relations or associates.
To mark the occasion, Nidd Valley Road Runners host the Guy Fawkes 10, which starts outside the castle in the picturesque village and finishes in the castle grounds.
Dave King set out at 4.30am from the south coast to get to the race where he finished 262nd in a time of 1hr 18min 49sec.
“It was a great race and a far cry from the awful conditions of the Great South Run a week earlier,” said Dave. “There were four pretty tough hills along the 10-mile route which made it a challenge, but the amazing Yorkshire scenery made up for any pain.”
