BUPA Great South Run 2007
IT rained and it rained and it rained, but that didn't dampen the spirits of the Stubbies who braved the elements to take part in Sunday's BUPA Great South Run.
Last year's race was wet, with the rain kicking in mid-morning. This weekend, the rain was already showering runners and spectators before the start of the 10-miler from Southsea Common.
Although organisers were hoping for a race entry exceeding 18,000, the awful conditions clearly put off many runners as a field of 11,443 entrants took part.
Kenya's world marathon champion Luke Kibet clocked 47 minutes 31 seconds to beat Spain's Chema Martinez and Jonathan Maiyo in the men's race. While another Kenyan, Rose Cheruiyot, made it an African double with victory ahead of Hayley Yelling and Mara Yamauchi in 53.44.
For Stubbington, Zippy Grice was the first Stubby to finish placing 44th in 56min 49sec, and Barry Hards also rubbed shoulders with the elite field coming home 245th in 1hr 3min 53sec.
