Grand Union Canal Half Marathon

Dave King

IF an award was being presented for daftest injury of the year, then Dave King would be a shoe-in for the honour.

For 10 months and after running more than 600 miles around the British Isles, the Stubby has remained injury-free. That was until last week, when Kinger injured his ribs after walking into a metal skip!

"It was dark and I wasn't watching where I was going," defended Mr Magoo. "I caught the edge of the skip right by the sternum and I've cracked a rib. It's bloody painful and makes breathing bloomin' hard."

At the weekend, Dave completed race 69 of the 80, the Grand Union Canal Half Marathon from Uxbridge in Middlesex to Watford.

"I took pain-killers for the run, and for the first half of the race it was okay, but the second half really hurt. You try to breath shallow, but it's difficult, and you get a cramping pain in your chest.

Dave was among 400 runners who took part in this inaugural half, clocking 1hr 38min 14sec. "It was pretty boring. Mile after mile of towpath, unsmiling fishermen and bemused barge owners." added Dave.

"Some smart Alec stole the water at the first drinks station after three miles, and the organisers hadn't bothered placing any toilets at the start so there was a huge queue at the nearby Esso garage."
