Julie Button Memorial 10km
THE Julie Button Memorial 10km road race in Surrey became just about bearable for Stubbington's John Fairhurst.
The veteran runner picked up a spot prize in the race which was organised by Elmbridge Road Runners - a teddy bear, which he duly presented to his granddaughter.
Based at Walton Casuals Football Club, the race, which was sponsored by Air Products who the Fairhurst's son Roger works for, was held along the road and back along the Thames towpath.
On a hot day, the race was won by Jason Simpson from South London Harriers in a time of 32.13, while the women's event was won by the great Irish athlete, Sonia O'Sullivan, who was running for Thames Hare & Hounds, and who placed 14th overall in 35.03.
A total of 525 runners took part, with John finishing 276th in 49.13 and seventh Vet60, while Anne was 483rd in 1hr 4min 5sec and second Vet65. Son Roger was 60th in 39 minutes flat.
