Clarendon Way Marathon
STUBBINGTON’S marathon men lifted the team prize at the Clarendon Way Marathon.
Zippy Grice, Alasdair Ewing, John Exley, Ray Gunner and Chris Hall who took part in the individual marathon from the Godolphin School in Salisbury to King’s School in Winchester.
Zippy has been in impressive form of late and Zippy claimed fourth place in the marathon with a time of 3hrs 2min 14sec. The event was won by Stuart Mills from Brighton & Hove AC in 2:50.31.
Not far behind was Alasdair in 22nd spot with 3:24.06, and fourth in the Vet45 category, while Chris ran an impressive 3:29.04 for 35th male and 14th in the Vet40 age group and completing the quartet was John with 3:36.59 for 45th and eighth in the Vet45’s.
The five great performances helped Stubbington to win the men’s team prize ahead of Portsmouth Joggers.
Ray Gunner managed to squeeze well inside the four-hour barrier over the multi-terrain course with 3:52.18 for 81st and 17th Vet45 as 296 men took part plus 70 women..
Katharine Jones, who runs second claim for Stubbington, won the women’s race wearing Winchester & District AC colours, in a time of 3:24.02, and 22nd overall, finishing just four seconds ahead of Alasdair.
Run alongside the event was a four-team relay marathon. The Stubbington A team of Paul Hammond, Gary Littlecott, Verity Wright and Sue Robinson, finished 30th out of 46 teams in 4hrs 0min 20sec – but only after Gary got into Mark Hindry’s car to drive it to the end of the first leg realising he had no maps, no-one’s phone number and he had no idea where he was going! Fortunately, Jane Butler who was part of the Lost Causes team along with Mark, Mark Dyer and Kathy McCain, was able to bale them out.
The Lost Causes placed 38th overall in a time of 4:10.26 in a relay won by Winchester & District AC in 2:47.33.
“It all added to a brilliant and succesful day for every one in a Stubb shirt,” said Gazza. “We will return next year.”
There was a veritable feast of Stubbies who took part in the half marathon, which started at Broughton and also finished at King’s School in Winchester.
Susie MacGregor finished eighth among a ladies field of 227 runners with a time of 1hr 48min 19sec for second Vet35. The ladies’ race was won by Heather Buckingham from Team Southampton in 1:36.40.
In the men’s race, Nick Kimber in 53rd was the highest placed Stubby with 1:43.41 and eighth Vet45. Winchester’s Matthew King triumphed in 1:21.17.
