Butser Hill Challenge
THE Butser Hill Run is less than a month away, and if you have never tackled the famous Butser, then isn't it about time that you gave it a go?
The event takes place on Sunday, September 23rd at Queen Elizabeth Country Park near Petersfield, just off the A3.
The 4.5-mile fell race is a stamina-sapping run which proves popular each year, and is an event jointly organised by Stubbington Green Runners, Victory AC and Portsmouth Joggers.
It was first held in 1978, and has each year raised tens of thousands of pounds for local charities. This year's charities are FORT (Friends of Oncology and Radiotherapy), an organisation covering South-East Hampshire who SGR have assisted in the past from the Stubbington 10km proceeds, and the Petersfield Outdoor Swimming Pool Refurbishment Fund. This is a charitable organisation. The pool is in desperate need of repair and is used by many organisations.
There's a junior fun run over one-and-a-half miles for 11 to 15 year-olds with one ascent to the top.
And then the main event is at 11.45am. This is a challenging four-and-a-half mile grass course with three steep ascents and descents of the 888ft hill, which is the highest point of the South Downs. The course is a Grade A Fell Race - that's how steep the challenge is!
