Brampton to Carlisle Road Race
STEVE Cram and Ron Hill are among those who have won the Brampton to Carlisle Road Race, the oldest 10-mile race in the UK.
Last weekend was the 56th staging of the event by Border Harriers which saw a large field of runners drawn from across the north of England and Scotland set out from the village of Brampton into Carlisle.
Liz Hall and Dave King flew the Stubby flag in Cumbria for a race which followed Hadrian’s Wall for part of the distance – although you never saw the historic wall since the run mainly traced the A69.
It wasn’t the most enjoyable of races – dull scenery, boring route, and pretty pricey with no memento at the end.
Liz ran faster than her Great South Run time to clock 1hr 32min 56sec for 571st, while Dave checked in 270th place with 1:10.40.
A total of 613 runners took part with the race won by Michael Morris from the Morpeth Harriers & AC in 53.01 and the first lady was Hayley Haining from Kilbarchan AAC in Scotland in 54.31.
The following day, Dave competed at the Gill Pimblott Memorial 5km Race at Tyldesley in Greater Manchester. It was a cold and murky day in Manchester for the charity event which is staged at Gin Pit Village where a mine once stood until it was closed in the 1960s.
The run was over heathland and woodland, on muddy paths around the village.
Dave finished 41st in a time of 23min 3sec from a field of 102 runners.
