Winchester 5k Race, 20th July 2006
TWENTY FOUR hours after enduring a tough ole RR10 course in the New Forest, RAF man Ben Whittaker was flying high in Winchester.
Ben took part in the Winchester City Centre 5km race where he managed to finish 32nd in a time of 18min 54sec. Wife Rachel, who also ran at hilly Janesmoor Pond the night before, also took her aching limbs to Winchester and ended up with a 35th place finish in 26:49.
The race was won by James Baker (Chichester Runners & AC) in 15:49, consisting of a multi-lap race which started and finished in The Broadway. Gordon Westley made a rare appearance in a Stubbington vest, and ran well for 61st place in 20:39.
Completing the trio, Joseph McDonald clocked 25:20 for 121st and 14th in the Vet50 category, giving Stubbington 11th in the team event, which was won by Winchester & District AC.
The women's race was won by Winchester's Karen Hazlitt in a time of 16:44 in a race featuring 244 runners overall. Winchester also won the ladies team event.
