Wessex XC, Newbury - 26th November 2006
A LIMITED number of runners competed at the Wessex Cross Country League fixture at Newbury. Did this have something to do with the Hayling 10 on the same day? Or, more likely, the rest of the runners were probably nursing hangovers after the very successful Awards Night.
Runners managed to miss the big downpours of rain and competed on a wet but fast cross country course.
First up for Stubbington was Chris Furnell, running in his first Wessex under-17 men's race and he finished a highly positioned 8th, just losing out to his arch rival from a local club.
There was only one lady in the senior women's race, so it was left to Nicola Wedick to fly the flag for Stubbington. She danced around the puddles on the course to finish an excellent 22nd .
The men mustered up three teams with seven runners and did extremely well with A team 5th, B team 2nd and Vet men 4th.
The A team was led home by Andy Simpson 21st, Graham Bell 32nd and Phil May 36th. The B team packed well, first home was Richard Simms in 46th, Nick Crane in 50th and Gordon Westley 54th. The Vets were made up by Graham Bell, Phil May and Richard Simms.
The next round of the Wessex Cross Country League takes place on Sunday, December 17th in Devizes, Wiltshire. Andy Simpson has more details on this afternoon fixture, and he can be reached at michelle.simpson@tiscali.co.uk
