Track & Field, Southampton - 20th May 2006
DAVE WOOLCOTT pulled off the shot of the day to set a new club record at the men's Southern League track and field meet.
Making his club debut, Dave managed to produce a 9.58m throw in the shot to eclipse Stewart Shaw's Stubby record by a measly one centimetre. That earned him fourth place in the competition.
And if that wasn't enough, Dave produced a hammer throw of 24m 84cms, the second furthest by any Stubbington thrower, which gave him second spot in the B string competition.
Conditions were windy at Southampton, where Stubbington finished runners up to a very strong Team Solent, who included ex-Stubbie Oli Williams in their squad.
Stewart himself was going well until a shoulder injury in the javelin forced an early retirement.
Both relay teams ran superbly, both runs resulted in the second fastest times ever for the club. Mike Williams, Dan Dell and Jamille Hogg featured in both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays, with Dave Marrott in the 100m and Ryan Gunner in the 400 which resulted in a couple of second places..
Mark Le Gassick ran a personal best 4min 17.6sec for second in the 1500m to move ahead of Tony Allen in the club rankings and just two seconds behind Zippy Grice who holds the club's metric mile record.
Ray Gunner stepped in to win the B string 3000m steeplechase in a really impressive time of 11min 18.3sec to nudge Gordon Westley out of the rankings.
Jamille Hogg ran a 200m pb of 24.2sec into the wind, Mike Williams won the 400m 'A' race with his best run for a while, a swift 51.6s, and he also gained maximum points in the 'A' pole vault. Ryan Gunner was close to 10 metres in his first triple jump, whilst Tor Duffin easily won the steeplechase in 10min 43sec, only a second away from his best.
Gordon Reid and Andy Simpson ensured the club picked up eight points in the 5,000m, and Dave Marrott equalled his pb to win the high jump 'B' string.
