Stubbington Green Runners & AC

Track & Field, Oxford - 29th April 2006

THREE club records marked a successful opening track meet of the season for Stubbington's men team.

Competing in a Southern League Division 3 fixture in Oxford, the men in green finished third with 121pts, up against strong opponents in Radley, Newton Abbott and Wessex/Bath and Salisbury.

There were 10 personal bests which, for the first meeting of the season, was very impressive.

As is often the case Dave Marrott was our busiest athlete. He took on five events and a relay, with the highlight coming when he set a club record in winning the 110m hurdles in a club record time of 20.1sec.

The other track record was set by Mark Le Gassick, who smashed his own 5000m record by over 20 seconds, winning the A string race in an impressive time of 15min 36.2sec.

Mark also moved ahead of Peter Hall to fourth in the club's all-time 1500m standings by winning the metric mile in a personal best 4min 21.4sec, just six seconds short of Zippy Grice's Club Record.

The third club record was set in the throws when. Stew Shaw sent the hammer out an impressive 31.68m to finish second A string thrower.

In the shot, Stew threw over nine metres but was pushed hard by Ray Gunner in his first shot competition. Ray threw 8.54m to go third on our club bests, easily surpassing Chris Hall's best effort!

Ray later managed to hold off young Ryan by one second in the 1500m. Ryan, making his senior debut, picked two very useful 'B' string second places in the middle distance events. He also ran a really impressive leg in the 400m relay which also made it onto the club record list as the club placed third in a time of 3min 44sec.

Despite having a strain, Jamille Hogg produced excellent times in the sprints - 12sec for third in the B string 100m and 52.8sec for second in the B string 400m, and a personal best.  Dan Dell's effort in the 800m for 2nd place (2min 10.4sec) made him unwell, but he was able to return later and still produced the fastest 400m relay leg!

Mike Williams again helped us in a huge variety of tricky events and as usual produced a very high standard in all disciplines

We may have found an answer to our shortage of 400m hurdlers. In his first attempt, Chris Munro started steady and moved up well to finish in a pretty decent time of 76.1sec.

Many thanks to both Chris and Martin Wellstead who helped judge the field events.

What a pairing in the steeplechase we have. Even after more than six months out with Achilles problems, young Tony Allen easily won both B strings in the 5,000m (16min 38.9sec) and steeplechase (10min 56.8sec). By his high standards, moderate times, by almost anyone else's, times we can only dream of!

Just ahead of Tony in the steeplechase was Tor Duffin (10min 42.3sec) who, after spending most of his afternoon playing in the sandpit, bounded over the barriers to finish a minute ahead of the second A string runner, and less than a second away from his P.B.

Last and certainly least were Mike Harper's miserable performances, but imagine his delight when he checked his discus throw. Not only a personal best throw of 18m 13cm, but incredibly one centimetre ahead of a certain Mr Andrew Simpson. Who will now be begging me to throw discus at the very next opportunity?!

The next match is very local at Southampton on Saturday, May 20th. It would be great to see a few friendly faces cheering us on.

For the first time it is a joint meeting with the Southern Womens' League, so start times are quite different. First event is the hammer at 12.45pm and on the track the 400m hurdles at 1.30pm.

The following Southern League meeting takes place on Saturday, June 3rd at Basingstoke, when the club will be short of athletes to compete because of the clash with the South Downs Relay.
