Track and Field, Guildford - 8th July 2006
DAVE WOOLCOTT set a new club record in the shot, as Stubbington's track and field team collected an encouraging third place in their latest Southern League Division 3 meet.
Dave nudged close to the 10 metre mark with a best distance of 9m 98cm for third place in the A string competition at Guildford.
This was Stubbington's first visit to Guildford where they were greeted by a warm sunny day with a breeze down the back straight.
A solid performance saw SGR finish third to two teams battling out for the promotion places. Those points ensure the club remains in this division next season, so we can go into the last fixture at Portsmouth with no pressure.
A mark of SGR's good account in the league are the successes in the field events where thanks to Dave and Stew Shaw, the club are picking up more points in the throws than we have before.
Other efforts of note were Mike Williams (52.7sec) and Jamille Hogg (53.3sec) taking maximum A and B points in the 400m. Mike also won the A string 400 hurdles (60.8) and pole vault (2.40m).
Mike was also in both victorious relay teams, the 4x400m squad improving their time by a second in 3min 40sec, and only a second of the club record.
There were three more improvements to our club record sheet. Dave Woolcott improved his hammer best, Ray Gunner improved his steeplechase (despite a steady start!) and Jamille Hogg ran a superb 100m to move ahead of Adam Smith on the rankings and join Dave Marrott with 11.7 secs.
Mark Le Gassick suffered a rare defeat in the 5,000m to the very swift James Baker from Chichester Runners, but managed to reverse the result in a fast 1500m an hour later.
Ryan Gunner managed personal bests in both the 800m and 400 hurdles despite tremendous wind resistance caused by his balloon-like swimming shorts!
For the first time in the six years we have been competing in the league, SGR's athletics guru, Mike Harper, managed to avoid competing at all. This is partly due to the fact that he is injured and slower, but also because Ray Gunner, Dave Marrott and Ryan Gunner are prepared to take on the events that are none too popular, thanks guys.
Also thanks to Mike Clarke, Brian Cooper, Martin Wellstead and Kay Hogg for their help in the field events.
The final fixture is at the Mountbatten Centre track on August 5th. Mike Harper will be away so Chris Hall will step in and co-ordinate the races. Anyone who can help should let Mike know, especially with the officiating. It is our home fixture so we need to provide some assistance. Contact Mike on theharpers12@hotmail.com
