Mens Track & Field, Basingstoke 3rd June 2006
We had only 8 athletes at Basingstoke due to an unfortunate clash with the South Downs. Of these 3 were either injured or recovering from injury and 1 could only stay for 2 events. Given this the one person you need is multi talented all rounder Dave Marrott. Dave usually does more events than anyone but that is usually 5 or 6.
On a very hot day in north Hampshire Dave managed 12 events, certainly the most ever recorded by a Stubbington athlete and I suspect he was aching just as much as out brilliant South Downs teams. Dave is a 100m/200m sprinter but he not only got round the 3000m s/c at the end of the day, but had to run a leg of the 400m relay straight after! Despite all this he still managed to equal his 100m pb and smash his own Club long jump record taking it within a whisker of 6 mtrs.
Another star was young Ryan who much like his dad seems happy to help in a crisis. Ryan ran in both relays and the 400m and 800m. He also had his first ever go at 400h and recorded a time that his dad would struggle to match. His high jump was also excellent where he finished second in the B string and recorded the 4 th best ever jump by a Stubbington athlete.
A late shift change meant that the flying Scotsman wee Gordon could also compete for us. This was really helpful as he took on the A string middle and long distance events despite the mid afternoon sun and Gordon's albino appearance he ran very well against tough opposition and also helped by taking on both the long and triple jump.
Our other fit athlete was young Jamille who produced real quality in both sprints achieving superb personal bests in both. He also ran the fastest legs in both relays in which we finished 2 nd and 3 rd .
Fortunately Dave arrived early as the Hammer competition started an hour before it should have. This didn't stop him producing a Club Record throw of almost 10 mtrs and recording our only A string victory of the day. Before dashing off to another engagement Dave also got in a decent Hammer throw, only Stew has thrown further for us.
Despite a tight hamstring young Chris ran both the 400m and 800m a relay and a couple of throws. Including beating me in the discus! With my bad back and strained calf and Achilles I managed last place in pretty much everything and could only watch the high hurdles where I would have got second place if uninjured. Still Gordon's strong run in the 5k meant a sub 19 min 5k was all I needed to do to win the B string, which was just about all I could manage.
It was great to see Gordon Westley back competing for us on the track again after breaking his leg last season at Salisbury in the high hurdles. After throwing the Javelin he ran the 1500m and the steeplechase with Dave. Although a little down on his best I'm sure we'll see the chase time come down a little later in the season.
We finished 4 th team not far behind City of Plymouth or Wimborne & Poole, and thanks to everyone's efforts we managed to get just over the 100 point mark.
I must also thank Mike Clarke our timekeeper, Brian Cooper and Martin Wellstead our Field Judges. There help is invaluable and just as important as the athlete's contributions, as without them we would be helping and unable to compete in all the events. Many thanks guys.
Next Fixture is at Guildford on 8 th July where we take on the Met Police, Overton/Andover and Chichester .
After that is our final match, our home fixture at the Mountbatten Centre Portsmouth on 5 th August.
