Today's Runner, Staunton Country Park - 26 Feb 2006
JON LEIGH pulled off one of his best ever results in a Stubbington vest with 23rd place in the Today's Runner Cross Country at Staunton Park in Havant.
Jon has been going great guns lately as part of his preparations for the London Marathon. A week after an encouraging performance at the Bramley 20, Jon set off at a rapid pace at Staunton Park in a race organised by Denmead Striders, putting in a quickfire 6min 18sec first mile.
He then settled well, and had a good tussle with a couple of Portsmouth Joggers runners to become the first Stubbington scorer in 23rd place. John Exley was not far behind in 33rd, while Mike Bell is starting to come into form after a year dogged by injury in 2005 with an excellent 39th placing.
Colin Elderfield, disappointed not to be able to turn out for the club at the English National Championships at Parliament Hill the day previously because of work commitments, put in yet another solid run with 63rd place, six positions ahead of team-mate Andy Lee.
Packing well towards the rear of the field were John Reeve, Gilbert Yeates and Andy Nicholson who came home in 94th, 95th and 96th places respectively. The men finished ninth overall on the day.
Sadly, Stubbington was unable to field a women's team, and thanks to John Exley's effort he managed to persuade two Brookfield School pupils and club members, Ellie Robinson (52nd) and Louise Light (55th) to represent the club.
Sixty five women took part in the race which was won by Polly Keen from Havant AC. The men's race was won by Andy Lovell from the Portsmouth Triathlon Club.
After this final race of the season, Stubbington finished joint ninth with Haslemere Borders AC. Liss Runners captured the team title.
