Test Way Relay, 8th September 2006
JUST champion - that's Stubbington Green Runners' men's team who won the Test Way Relay in sensational fashion.
Gordon Reid guided the team home on the anchor leg from Lee to Eling Wharf, which included wading through knee-high water around Nursling, but crossed the finish line more than a minute ahead of nearest rivals Southampton Running Club.
It was only the second time in the club's history that Stubbington have won the trophy - the last occasion was in 1999. The team of Zippy Grice, Chris Hall, Mark Le Gassick, Tor Duffins, Alisdair Ewing, Andy Vernon, Barry Hards, Ray Gunner and Gordon Reid put the club's name back on the trophy.
Winchester won both the women's and mixed events, as Stubbington fielded two men's teams, a ladies and a mixed squad for the near 50-mile trek from Inkpen Beacon near Newbury to Southampton.
More details shortly, including a full list of results, plus revelations about which Pompey-supporting Stubby called back a Southampton runner who had gone off course!
