Summer Handicap, 9th June 2006
PUT a prawn on the barbie and come running with Stubbington Green Runners this Friday.
Yep, it's Summer Handicap time on June 9th. Chairman Mike Clarke has been out and devised a route, and has hopefully remembered the winners' bottles of wine for the first male and female who can complete the course, which starts and finishes by Locks Heath Sports and Social Club, the closest to 8.15pm.
Of course no watches are allowed, sextants maybe, but it is all about pacing yourself around the course which takes in Thatcher's Copse, Solent Cliffs and the Chilling Fields.
Afterwards, there will be a barbecue and drinks at the sports and social club, which is situated just off Warsash Road.
If you haven't gone out and run the route to check the distance and your rough time in getting round, then there's still time.
So the route:
Start at the far end of the car park at the Locks Heath Sports & Social Club by the cricket nets. Cross the road, head down the road and take the first left turn into the car park.
Go through the car park and head down the track. Go along the side of the woods and take the first left turn. Go down the steps and follow the path - be careful if the planks are wet. Go up the steps and follow the path to the gate. Go through the gate, turn right and head down the path.
At the junction with the concrete road, cross the road and go through the gap in the hedge. Turn left and head towards Thatcher's Copse. Go round the outside of the copse and continue round until you are running parallel with the road. Continue along over the log and past the house.
The path will now be running parallel with the cliff path and they will, in time, meet. Continue along the cliff path before going down onto the beach. Go over the bridge and up into Chilling Field. Run along the path, heading away from the sea, and at the corner go right.
Follow the path along, then turn right through the trees. Continue along the path, along past the woods, and head back to the social club. The finish line will be clearly marked by the end of the cricket nets.
Was that clear enough? Anyone who ends up in Cowes has to make their own way back.
The usual rules apply, no watches, and £1 to run or walk. The winner is the person who finishes closest to 8.15pm at the Locks Heath Sports & Social Club where we will adjourn to afterwards.
