Stansted Slog, 17th September 2006
A WEEK after guiding Stubbington Green Runners to the most famous of victories at the Test Way Relay, Zippy Grice and Alasdair Ewing were shining at the Stansted Slog.
Organised by Portsmouth Joggers, the Slog is based at Stansted House at Rowlands Castle and comprises a delightful run through Stansted Forest and the gentle hills of Chalton Down. The 13-mile run is virtually all off road with spectacular views along the way.
Running alongside Sunday's race was the Slog's little brother, the Slug, which is an eight mile race - a gentler run with less hills.
Zippy, who has had a quiet year lately, ran strongly in the Slug to win the race in a time of 52min 51sec from Rob Ward from Portsmouth Joggers, in 54:00. A total of 74 runners tackled the Slug, and the top lady was Winchester's Kathryn Bailey in sixth overall with 55:24.
Over the longer distance, Alasdair came home in sixth place behind winner Nick Baker from Denmead Striders, who won in 1hr 20min 50sec. Alasdair ran well for a time of 1:29.42 and team-mate Nick Kimber had a good outing with a time of 1:47.27 for 56th place. One hundred and sixty six runners finished the Slog with Sally Gilbert from Team Southampton topping the female runners in 1:41.01.
