Seaford 10k, 18th June 2006
THE Harder they run, the Harder they succeed. That's the Hards family who have become something of an institution at the popular Seaford 10km race in East Sussex.
The event, which was revived this year, celebrated its 20th anniversary and the Hards family enjoyed considerable success. Weather conditions was hot, particularly around the Cuckmere Valley. Organisers are considering changing the route next year.
Dad Barry won the Vet40 prize by coming home sixth in a time of 38min 18sec, beaten by 15-year-old Lewis, running for Phoenix AC, who was fifth in 38:08 and won a prize for first under-20 finisher. Darryl Hards was ninth in 39:43, and Peter Hards 36th in 44:51.
Beverley, running her first race in four years, won the Female Vet45 category by coming home 56th in 47:08. Little Ella-May, aged seven took part in the fun run which she completed in 5min 33sec.
Bev, who joined the rest of the Hards in winning the social team prize and also a special award for the family's support to the Seaford 10km, said afterwards: "I haven't race for four years so found the going tough. I think I will now go back into retirement.
"On a personal note it was good to see Martin Bulger again (race organiser). He has done all the New Forest marathons (24 this year) as he comes from New Milton. He is writing a book about what makes people do marathons - insanity!"
The 10km race was won by Geoff Gray from Seaford Striders in 36:17 and the first lady finisher was Gill Wheeler from Hailsham Harriers who was seventh overall in 38:43.
