Race Comments 2006
SO what did competitors have to say about this year's Stubbington 10km? Joy or jaded, a breeze or bloomin' hard, painful or pretty much a piece of cake?
Here's a selection of runners' comments either sent to the SGR website or posted on the Runner's World website http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/
THANKS again for all the excellent organisation for today's Stubbington 10K. This is my third time (I missed last year as I seemed to have flu or colds for the whole of the winter!) and have always appreciated the professional approach to the day. The Marshalls were so friendly and efficient, as usual! Already looking forward to next year and improving my time. Maybe we can book a drier day but we were so lucky not to have it puring down as it was along the coast from early this morning. Thank you again!
EV DENISON
MANAGED to get round much better than expected! Wasn't sick half way or at 9km like last year! Although was nearly sick when I crossed the line. Took it very slowly and steady, but still beat last year's time!
Well done everyone.
BRUNETTE BIRD
WELL, I think I might have beat, or at least equalled, my target of 45:00, but it's a bit difficult to be sure. I need a new watch! The one I have is excellent, but in the heat of a race finish I always seem to hit the wrong button, so it doesn't stop when I want it to. By the time I did get it to stop, it said 45:05. And my guess is that it took me about 5 seconds to do that, delayed a little by having to suppress the urge to throw up - I was really putting in some effort for the sprint finish!
But of course it's all pretty academic because when the time taken to cross the start line is added on I will be at least 10 or 15 seconds outside the 45 minute target anyway. The conditions were quite good, not too windy, and with some nice cooling drizzle thrown in for good measure.
BRIAN M
WELL done Brian, you must have been very near me (Victory AC), I finished in 44:55 and then went on to cough my guts up too! Interesting to see what times will get posted. When can we expect the results? (ED'S NOTE: http://www.sgrac.net/2006/Results/sgrac.10k.html ) Very enjoyable race overall. That bonfire at 9km wasn't too helpful though!

WELL organised flat course with PB potential.
Scenery includes a short stretch along the coast and a section of lane running past a golf course (mind your heads!) although most of the course is in suburbia. The course is pretty flat with just the odd slight undulation - PB potential in good wind free weather. Shame it was cold and wet this year! A pleasant enough atmosphere with a 1200 strong field there is a bit of a buzz! Very well organised by SGRAC - well done! Refreshments excellent!! Start was a little bit congested but no big deal. The gents showers seem to offer only two choices - scalding hot or freezing cold - and as at most venues the changing rooms were dirty. However, none of this is a reflection on the organizers. Entrance fee about average for this type of race but worth it for the nice mug! A flat well organised race so a good one for beginners.

GOOD 'first of the year' race
Despite the rather damp weather, this was an enjoyable race. Very good organisation, plenty of marshals, adequate KM markers, well sited water station, refreshments (nice cakes!!) plus a mug to take to work tomorrow!
JO MACKLIN
GREAT atmosphere despite the cold and rain.
ANDREA GOOK
GREAT race, and a PB!
Good race despite the weather, start was a bit congested but to be expected at these events. All in all very enjoyable, sign me up for next year.
MIGHTYMATT
PLEASE thank, all the other people that organised the run, and the Marshals and Police that stood in the cold and wet for us runners! Thanks,
GARY COOPER
WELL done on another excellently organised morning of athletics. Both Harry and David have taken part in the fun run for a number of years. Regards,
BRIAN
EXCELLENT - thanks again to SGRAC
Mug is excellent, and a better design than the previous year. The start was muddled again - but that is the runners fault not the organisers. Shame only 1000 out of 1200 turned up - when so many cant get in!!!!
ELLAMAC
A GOOD way to start the year!
Despite having a nightmare this year (cramp after 2K), this race is one of my favourites. Flat and fast, friendly and well-organised, it is ideal for beginners. The only thing I would say is the start is a bit congested and we could do with some indication about what proposed finishing time starts where (if you see what I mean). But as I said, a great way to kick off the new year

I ATTENDED the race as a spectator, to watch some of my friends compete. Apart from the weather putting a downer on spirits I had a very enjoyable day and must say what a great and well organised event it seemed to be. I think the presence of the police was good to see as I always worry that the runners will be knocked down. I took my neice and nephew along as they are beginning to take an interest in running and I thought it would be a positive experience for them to see what went on at a race, some of those runners at the front were running so fast it seemed, wow, the children were so excited.

THIS is the first time I've done this race, now I have the running bug after The Great South Run last year. Great organisation by everyone from the club, nice mug and not so nice weather but it could have been a lot worse! Can the start be made wider somehow for less congestion at the start? Thanks again.
MARK CAPOCCI
WEATHER felt ideal for running. That bloke burning the straw at 9k should be shot! Slowly!
As I wasn't gassing I went as fast as I comfortably could and was surprised at my 59:02 (stopwatch). That would have been even better if I hadn't pulled a calf at 8k! Hobbled home and have had the ice working it's magic. Improved today so will take care of it. How did everyone do? Next up for me will be Ryde 10 miler on January 29th, calf permitting.

My first 10k and what a superb experience!! Congrats to all involved, and thanks to the marshalls for their superb encouragement even to the back markers like me!! I was so impressed with the friendliness that I wanted to join the club, but unfortunately could not find where to do so. Nevertheless it has inspired me to run more regularly - I signed up to two more races today!!. Thanks again, I'm sure that many more will take up running as a result of taking part in your event. See you next year.

I received a letter from Dave Hall whose email does not feature on your site. Could you extend my thanks and surprise for being awarded a prize to Dave and all you guys who make the Stub run such fun. Wasn't it bloody cold though!!! Perhaps you could let it slip for six months next year and hold at the start of July, but something tells me it would be too hot then. I never waited for the ceremony because I was frozen and didn't realise I was a winner. I've had an extrordinary season three races three prizes, that's the Great South, Gosport and Stub, it must be too easy for us guys.
Till next year happy running.
