Stubbington Green Runners

New Forest Half Marathon, 17th September 2006

THE hills were alive with the sound of.....Marcus! The New Forest Half Marathon is not the easiest of 13-milers, with a few gentle hills thrown in along the route which starts and finishes in New Milton.

The field of 1,373 finishers was not helped by some warm temperatures - among them, Stubbington's very own Marcus Lee. As a result his time suffered a little, yet he was able to post a very respectable mark of 1hr 39min 33sec for 98th place.

The race tends to attract a huge field drawn from all over the country, yet surprisingly few Stubbington runners choose to enter - this is possibly down to the fact that you have to enter ridiculously early for the half marathon. Race entries closed this year in July.

Lauren Coates did choose to run and she finished 285th overall in a time of 1:48.13. Team-mate Trevor Tollett was 356th in 1:51.26, while Margie Pritchard crossed the finish line at Arnewood School in a time of 2:06.23 for 746th, and not far behind was Verity Wright in 838th with 2:10.14.

Jaquelyn Sherman battled her way through the heat, which really warmed up around lunchtime, with 2:14.54 for 943rd.

Stubbington's ladies team managed to finish sixth in the team rankings behind winners, Bournemouth Joggers, with New Forest Runners second.

The half marathon was won by Lee Rodriguez, 32, who captured the 13.1-mile run in a time of 1hr 12min 6sec. Rodriquez, who used to compete for New Forest Runners and is now unattached, won the half marathon in 2003 and 2004, but was injured for last year’s race.

In the women’s half marathon, it was same again for Marie Synott-Wells from Ranelagh Harriers in Essex, who won for the second year running. Her time of 1:24.31 was two seconds quicker than 12 months earlier.

Sadly, no Stubbies competed in the marathon, despite a few provisional entries on the start list.

Heather Bowers was one of these, but she admitted that because of work she had been unable to train properly for the marathon and had decided to pull out before the day itself. Instead Heather is now gearing up for the BUPA Great South Run next month and has already taken a charity place to compete in next April's Flora London Marathon.

The marathon was won by New Forest Runners' Steve Wright in a time of 2hrs 49min 25sec in a tight finish which saw the first five runners finish within five minutes of each other.

But the performance of the day came from Heather Foundling-Hawker, from Honiton Running Club in Devon. She broke the 11 year old course record by nearly seven minutes on her way to 2:51:14, and second overall. Her time was bettered only by Wright among the men, and her split time would have won the half marathon.

She will be representing Great Britain in the World 100 Kilometre Ultra Running Championships in South Korea next month.
