STUBBINGTON'S Andy Vernon has earned a call-up for the European Cross Country Championships in Italy.
Andy earned his spot as first reserve for the senior team after a scintilating run at the UK Cross Challenge and European trials at Liverpool's Sefton Park.
Running for Aldershot, Farnham & Distict, Andy came from 12th to 6th with a blistering last lap over an energy-sapping mud covered course.
One runner even lost his spikes after they were sucked off his feet in the quagmire and he was left to run in his socks!
Frank Tickner from Wells City Harriers won the race, but for Andy his impressive performance has earned him selection for the Europeans next month, although the hope is that he will run the under-23 race and not the senior event, since he is a real under-23 medal prospect.
