D-Day 10km Race, 7th June 2006
SHE'S home for the summer! Rachel Openshaw is back on the south coast from her studies at the University of Surrey in Guildford, and she was one of a number of Stubbington runners who took part in the D-Day 10km Race.
The event, organised by City of Portsmouth AC, has changed its route from previous years. When once, runners would head out from the Mountbatten Centre, along Hilsea and around IBM at Northarbour, now the route still starts at finishes at the stadium, but includes a loop back around the athletics track at half way.
Conditions were hot and humid for this popular race, and Rachel finished 24th in the ladies event with a time of 50mn 42sec. Karrie Blake from Denmead Striders won the women's race in a time of 38:28. Rachel finished not too far behind team-mate Lauren Coates who clocked a time of 47:24 for 10km.
The ladies team finished fifth behind winners Gosport Road Runners, with a Stubbington veterans team taking third in a category also won by Gosport.
For the men, Paul Hammond was the club's best placed runner with a very sound time of 42:13 for 69th place and eighth in the Vet45 category. Eric Beck and Neil Jarvis finished close together with Eric, still building his fitness, coming home in 93rd in 44:03, and Neil 96 th in 44:11.
In the team rankings, Stubbington's vets came fourth, and the vet B team were placed 10th .
A total of 240 men and 96 women took part, with the race won by Robin Copestick from Bournemouth AC with a time of 33:20.
