Butser Hill Challenge, 24th September 2006
THE only way is up - in a manner of speaking - for the Butser Hill Challenge which takes place on Sunday, September 24th. This week, race organisers handed over a giant cheque for £18,000 to the Portsmouth Hospitals' NHS Trust Rocky Appeal, to launch the autumn race.
This will take place at the Queen Elizabeth Country Park, just four miles south of Petersfield off the A3, with the main event, a 4.5 mile race, taking place at midday.
There will also be a Rocky Appeal sponsored forest walk over 2.5 miles at 10am, followed by children's races over varied distances from half a mile for under-9s to 1.5 miles for under-16s.
The Buster Hill Challenge is a Grade A fell race, jointly organised by Portsmouth Joggers, Victory Athletic Club and Stubbington Green Runners, with support from Churcher's College in Petersfield, Forest Enterprise, Hampshire County Council and the Petersfield Post.

The current Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust Rocky Appeal is aiming to raise £2 million for a unique cancer laboratory, which will be the first of its kind in the UK and will be sited at the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth.
It will be a Centre for Research and Clinical Excellence that will ensure the highest standard of care for patients with Cancer and to put people's minds at ease. It will not be necessary to use any animals whatsoever in the research.
The laboratory will have the potential to revolutionise anti-cancer treatment.
It is proposed to initially concentrate on breast cancer, ovarian cancer, skin cancer, bowel cancer, testicular cancer, prostate cancer and cancer of the oesophagus.
This new unique cancer laboratory will be of great benefit to very many patients and their families faced with this dreadful disease.
The laboratory will be able to develop treatment tailored to each patient's individual needs.
Cancer can affect one in three people - no one is exempt.
So far, fund-raisers have managed to raise £1,450,000. The date for the opening of this laboratory totally depends on how quickly we can raise the remaining £550,000 .
