Becky Gough

WELL done Stubbington's Becky Gough, an England gold medallist. Becky helped her country to gold at the Schools' Cross-Country International at Stowe School in Buckinghamshire, where she was part of the winning intermediate girls' team.

It was an amazing achievement by the English girls considering Ireland had got off to such a strong start.

With six girls in the first eight halfway round the course, it looked as if the Irish were heading for a surefire victory, but gradually the English got among them to win with 41 points.

Becky, who runs second claim with Stubbington and who lives in Fareham, came 11th. Hampshire team-mate Louise Webb came 14th.

"It was really pleasing for two local girls to have come away with gold medals," said Geoff Cunliffe, secretary of the Hampshire Schools' AA.
