Stubbington Green Runners & AC

THE clocks may have gone an hour forward, but that didn't catch out Stubbington Green's Mark Le Gassick with a timely win at the Two Saints 10km.

Le Gassick has just returned from a sporting break in Lanzarote which meant he missed the previous weekend's Eastleigh 10km, surrendering his lead at the top of the Hampshire Road Race League.

But he was on song at this popular road race which takes in Bevois Valley, Portswood and Highfield, as well as taking in Southampton Common.

Le Gassick won the the race in 34min 2sec, almost a minute faster than the time set by last year's winner, Mike Cummings from Hardley Runners, who was forced to settle for second place in 34:29. Winchester & District AC's Ian Hardcastle was third in 35:35, with Southampton Running Club's Vito Raucci, the first veteran to finish, fifth overall in 35:36.

Photographer Mike Bell, last seen wearing a John Motson-style sheepskin coat cheering on runners at the Eastleigh 10km and taking pictures, found his green vest and ran well for 22nd overall and the second Vet 50 in 42:06. Trailing in his wake was team-mate Paul Hammond who was 25th in 42:12 which gave him seventh place in the Vet40 age group.

It was also good to see the familiar face of Andy Rogers back running once again. Andy was one of SGR & AC's founder members and played an instrumental role in the development of the club's junior section.

In the women's race, unattached runner, Sara Winter, led the field home in 37:44, which claimed ninth place overall, almost five minutes ahead of closest rival Jane Field from Romsey Road Runners, who was second in 42:02.

The race, now in its 22nd year, attracted 275 runners with all proceeds from the race going towards the Two Saints Housing Association which supports housing projects in Southampton .

It started life back in 1984 as the St Dismas 10k in order to raise funds for the St Dismas charity. Then since the merging of St Dismas with the St Petroc's housing charity a couple of years ago, the race changed its name to the Two Saints 10km.

This weekend, the attention turns to Totton for the popular Totton 10km Road Race, Organisers, Totton Running Club, have moved the event from its traditional afternoon time to an 11am start from the Testwood Sports College .

This will be the 25th running of the race, and to mark the occasion the organisers will be handing out limited edition tumblers to all finishers. There are late entries on the day if numbers have not been filled, and the event forms race eight in the Hampshire Road Race League.
