Stubbington Green Runners & AC

FOR Stubbington Green's resident snapper, Mike Bell, he discovered the true meaning of a photo finish at the latest round of the Today's Runner Cross Country series.

Mike has only recently returned to running after a brief lay-off through injury, and the race at Farnham gave him a chance to test his fitness. On a bright, crisp day, with temperatures just below freezing, Mike gave a good account of himself on the dry and sandy course.

Coming to the finish, he thought he would be the fifth and final scorer for the men's team, but hadn't quite taken into account the sprinting prowess of team-mate Twigg Ponsford. "I overtook Twigg thinking I was going to be the last scorer, but he was having none of that and came back at me at the finish." Twigg finished 62nd and Mike 64th as the men's team finished fourth on the day in the team placings behind winners, Liss Runners.

Chris Hall led the race for much of the course, but was overtaken in the closing stages still managing to finish in an impressive fourth place.

In the battle of the Gunners, dad Ray edged home in 14th ahead of teenage son Ryan in 19th. Jon Leigh ran well for 54th place and with Twigg made up the Stubbington team.

Other results: Andy Lee 79th, Nick Crane 81st, Colin Elderfield 93rd, Tony Mundy 99th, Gilbert Yeates 110th, John Reeve 119th, John Vose 137th.

Sadly, despite a large contingent of female runners at the previous Today's Runner race in Petersfield, Stubbington were unable to field a ladies' team. The next race in the Today's Runner series takes place on Sunday, January 15th at Midhurst, starting at 11am.
