Newbury Triathlon

IT went all right on the night (or day) for Veronica Wright at the Newbury Triathlon.

She was one of four Stubbington members who took part in the gruelling event which consisted of a 300m swim, a 21km bike ride and a 5km run to finish.

Veronica opened with a 7min 58sec swim, a 54min 53sec bike ride and then clocked 24min 51sec for the run, and a total time of 1hr 27min 42sec.

According to husband Peter: "Veronica was having a great battle with a much younger lady and passed her on the run to come home in a personal best after competing in this event for 10 years. She knocked four minutes off her time for last year to claim third Female Super Vet, which made all our training worthwhile."

He added: "I have been relegated to the role of trainer, and with Veronica unable to run train at any distance, due to a hip problem after falling off her bike last year, we have been cycling over 55 miles a week for three months (81 miles in one day, almost up to superstar Caroline Street's standard!) and running only four miles."

For the Newbury Triathlon, competitors started off at 30-second intervals. Peter admitted that his tactics tend to centre around chasing Veronica on the swim and then passing her on the start of the cycle section.

"But the competitor behind me decided to swim over me, just as I was sucking a big lung full of air, and kick when I was down near the bottom." he mitigated for his 10min 28sec swim. Peter clocked 53min 36sec for the bike section and 23min 57sec for the 5km run for a total time of 1hr 28min - just 18 seconds behind Veronica.

Graham Watts was the top performing Stubby. He recorded a total time of 1hr 19min 13sec following a 5min 37sec swim, 48min 51sec bike ride and a 24min 45sec run.

Leanne Marr was the fastest swimmer of the green vested quartet, sweeping through the 300m swim in 5min 35sec, she took 56min 9sec for the bike and 30min 13sec for the run to give a total time of 1hr 31min 57sec.
