Stubbington Green Runners & AC

Men's Southern League Div 3W, Hemel Hempstead - 30 July 2005

We finished the season in style at Hemel, with 2nd place and our best ever finish in the league. We finished in the top half of this higher division for the first time. Our 7th place came as a result of a 3rd, a 4th, a 1st and then two 2nd places. The Royal Navy and Abingdon were promoted and Salisbury and Chilton were relegated.

This was our furthest fixture, so it was encouraging to have 11 athletes competing, 4 Officials/helpers and young Ryan gaining experience as a non scorer.

The highlights here were Dan, Zippy, Jamille and Mike improving their Club 4 x 400 record, with another superb victory. Mike had earlier become the first Stubbington athlete to clear 3 metres in the Pole vault. Even more of an achievement when you realise he has to borrow a pole from one of the other competitors as we don't have a Club pole! The other outstanding effort was from Mark in the 5k, improving his own Club record, and being the first Stubbington runner under 16 mins on the track.

During the season there were 16 athletes and 8 helpers. I managed to plod round at all 5 meetings, but the only one at all 5 making a significant contribution was Mike Williams. Not only does Mike cover several events more than he needs to, but still appeared for us early on when he hadn't trained and by his very high standards wasn't running great times. I'm pleased to say that he progressed really well through the season, finishing back at a Grade 1 standard. Not far behind, missing just one fixture were Dave, Zippy, Tor, Mark, Jamille and Dan. All six had an excellent season and without them we would not be in this league. Andy, Stew and Tony and Chris M gained us valuable points at 3 meetings, and Ray, Gordon, Mike B and Simon also helped us out.

I was going to say 'almost as important', but it would have been incorrect. Just as important was the assistance received from our Officials and Helpers. Without them we would have been stuffed. Brian Cooper, Martin Wellstead and Murray Williams missed just one meeting. Mike Clarke was at 3, Dave Churcher and Alan Newell at 2, and Kirsty Harper did the results at our home fixture.

Hopefully all will return next season, and with a few new faces and Gordon Westley back after his broken leg, we will again try and crack a few more Club records. After all, Chris Hall is still on the Club records in the Shot, Hammer, and 5000, and that can't be right! - Mike Harper
