Stubbington Green Runners & AC

Mens Southern League Division 3W, Swindon , 25 June 2005

by Mike Harper

With only 8 athletes here it was a remarkable team effort that saw us win a meeting in this higher division for the first time. The result went right down to the last event the 4 x 400m relay, where we managed to beat Plymouth by less than a second. Dave had his usual busy afternoon, with the highlight in the triple jump where he broke Richard Blencowe's Club Record, set 5 years ago at our first ever meeting. His p.b in the long jump was only 7 cm off Tor's club record, and his short sprints also produced pleasing times. The other Club records to go, were both to Stew in the Hammer and Shot. Stew extended his own Club Record, slightly in the Shot, and by over 4 metres in the Hammer. With 3 firsts and 2 seconds from his 5 events Stew's point's haul of 23 was invaluable. Andy also had a busy day, producing p.b's in the Hammer and Chase. After leading the 5k for about 6 laps, Andy was overhauled by the leaders, but despite some barracking from his team mates about his tactics, did produce a very good time to finish second in the B string. Mike ran 3 and won 3 on the track, with his times coming back towards his very high standards. A win and 2 seconds in the jumps and throws wasn't bad either! In the middle distance, the races were fast and had close finishes with Zippy just edged out in a couple, but his times are coming down to look good for the next meeting. Without Dan, Tor helped us out in the 800m, and as usual put in very good jumps. He finished the day with another quality s/chase to finish 2nd in the A to a very strong Plymouth athlete. The same athlete edged out Mark in the 5k, who was only 5 seconds off his own Club record. A first and second in a couple of B string events from Mark also pushed our points total up, to show that every event proved valuable and barring disasters at the last 2 fixtures should keep us in the Division. Finally, we are very fortunate to have several helpers at these meetings, as some other clubs have to get the athletes to help, which we rarely have to do. So thanks to Mike Clarke (timekeeper), Brian Cooper, Martin Wellstead, Chris Munro and Alan and Murray.
