NEW boy Ross Lamport made his mark on his Stubbington Green debut with 11th place at a rainswept Lordshill 10.

Ross has recently joined the club and been training on a Thursday. In his first race in a green Stubbington vest, he didn't let the club down by running an impressive 58min 18sec over an undulating 10-mile course.

Mark Le Gassick once again put in another tremendous performance. Coming off the back of his win at last month's Hardley Half Marathon, Mark finished third on Sunday to maintain his lead at the head of the Hampshire Road Race League standings.

Mark clocked a personal best 54min 15sec, finishing behind winner Andrew Hennessy from Wells City Harriers, who won in 52:58, from Southampton Running Club's Andy Morgan Lee in 53:30.

Heavy rain and occasionally difficult conditions underfoot, plus the notorious oxygen-sapping Tot Hill at mile 7, marked the third race in the Hampshire Road Race League series, which started from Lordshill Outdoor Recreation Centre and finished by Oaklands Community School.

The route took the rain-drenched field on a course around the country lanes of Nursling, Lee, North Baddesley and Rownhams. The course was flat and gently undulating for the first six miles, and then the hills kicked in for a challenging final third of the run.

Stubbington put out a strong men's team with Andy Simpson, still bleary eyed after becoming a father last week, finishing 25th in 62:01 and Mike Harper's 63:35 good enough for 37th. The men's team finished fourth in the team rankings.

It was a big day for Gary Littlecott. At this race three years ago, Gary collapsed after three miles and was rushed to hospital, requiring surgery to his lungs. After a six month lay-off, Gary returned to running, but this was the first time he has run at Lordshill since that race.

This time he got round the course, wearing a garish luminous yellow top underneath his green vest (just in case a pea souper enveloped the course!) and was pleased with his run, clocking 82:32 for 228th - well outside his personal best, but delighted to have exorcised that ghost.

Disappointingly, Stubbington was only able to field two women runners, and so was unable to complete a team for the first time in the HRRL series.

Lauren Coates finished strongly in 76:06, for 164th overall and 22nd lady. A hoarse-sounding Chris Haskell, who had tried in vain to raise a few more women runners to make three-strong team, clocked 94:15, and was the fifth best Veteran 55 runner.

Karen Rushton from Southampton Running Club was the first female finisher in 65:31 for 44th overall.

Stubbington has just about managed to scramble together a women's team for the Overton and Hardley league races, but sadly came up short this time. And it's not as if there is a shortage of female Stubbies.

Bearing in mind the huge numbers of women who turn up at club nights, particularly on a Monday at Whiteley and Wednesday at Crofton, it would be nice if a few more chose to wear club colours at Hampshire Road Race League and Hampshire Cross Country League races.

Maybe it is a perception problem that the league races are for elite runners only. But that is far from the truth.

The league races cater for runners of all abilities (we're talking about runners of upto 11-minute mile pace). Many clubs, such as the Southampton Running Sisters, put out teams of runners who are not going to be competing for honours, who will be middle-packing and even finishing at the back of the field, but who turn up simply because they enjoy running.

If you are unsure, then take a look at the results below to see that the final two runners were clocking 11min 19sec and 11min 54sec pace. From a field of 105 female runners, the Eastleigh runner who finished half way in 57th place recorded a time of 85:32 for 10 miles, which is 8 minute 33 second a mile pace.

The atmosphere for league races is relaxed. It is a fun day out, you get to run somewhere different - maybe across terrain and in conditions which you are not used to - and instead of going out for that long run alone on a Sunday, why not try a league race? You may be surprised. It will also act as a good benchmark to your progress, encourage and develop your own running, as well as playing a part in helping the team.

Of course for some runners there are childcare issues or simply because Saturday or Sunday is considered a family day, but just making one or even two races a year is not a huge commitment - and if every club member did that we would have no problems making teams.
